Tottenham could equal historic unwanted record at home to Man Utd in Premier League clash

Manchester United head to Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Saturday on the back of a four-match unbeaten run, and with renewed confidence under Ruben Amorim's direction.

For possibly the first time in his reign at Old Trafford, the Portuguese has his playing staff working together as a coherent unit, and positive results have followed.

False dawn for Amorim and United?

The jury is still out on whether this could be the start of something bigger and better from the Red Devils or if it's yet another false dawn.

Given how badly things had gone for Amorim at various stages of his United tenure, the present performance levels and results will be very welcome indeed.

If they're able to continue in their good run of current form, the North West giants will have put together a run of five games without defeat for the first time since January/February 2024.

However, they'll have to do so against a Spurs side that United haven't beaten in their last seven matches, losing the last four in all competitions.

Spurs could equal unwanted record

Should the Lilywhites triumph again, it will be the first time since 1959/60 that they'll have won three consecutive top-flight matches against the Red Devils.

In United's favour is the fact that the hosts have lost more matches than any other club at home in 2025 (nine), and only in 1994 and 2003 have Spurs been defeated on 10 separate occasions at home in a calendar year.

Though the start of Thomas Frank's time in North London could be considered to be largely positive, the fact remains that across spells at Brentford and Spurs, the Dane has actually lost nine of his last 16 home games, winning just three.

With a current average of just 9.7 shots per match, Tottenham's lowest output since 1997/98, that doesn't bode well for Frank to improve upon his recent home record.

Viral image spoke volumes

After the recent defeat to Chelsea, a match in which Spurs recorded a pathetic xG of 0.1, the disappointment was clear for all to see as both Djed Spence and Micky van de Ven completely blanked Frank as they walked off.

It provided a stark, viral image that spoke volumes.

What the hosts therefore don't need is to be facing a United side that has had the most shots in the Premier League this season (54), the second most total shots (153), and who will be rooting for revenge after losing last season's Europa League final.

Particularly given that Tottenham will be expected to be without 10 players, with Lucas Bergvall the latest to join an ever-growing injury list.

Identical league records

By contrast, United should only have long-term absentee, Lisandro Martinez, unavailable for a fixture which could see Bruno Fernandes provide an assist for the third consecutive away game for the first time since November 2020.

Bryan Mbeumo loves playing against this opponent too, and his four goals against them are only bettered by his output against Southampton and Brighton and Hove Albion (five goals).

Interestingly, both clubs have virtually identical records this season, having both won five of their 10 Premier League games, drawing two and losing three.

17 points apiece sees them sandwiching Chelsea who also have the same amount of wins, losses and draws, goal difference being the only thing placing Spurs in sixth, Chelsea seventh and United eighth.

Neither side can afford to lose

With the North London derby coming up at the Emirates Stadium directly after the international break, this really isn't a game that Tottenham can afford to lose.

That's because Crystal Palace, Brighton and Aston Villa are all only two points behind them, so a couple of reverses could well see Spurs in the lower half of the table before the end of the month.

The same applies to United, of course, though their run of matches is a little kinder on paper.

There hasn't been a goalless draw in the fixture since December 2014, and in 12 of the last 14 games, at least two goals have been scored, indicating that another exciting 90+ minutes is on the cards.

Classic encounter in prospect?

Whilst the result remains of paramount importance, what's also clear is that both managers need to get some consistency from their squads over an extended period.

Frank has time on his hands to get it right, which won't necessarily be afforded to Amorim, whatever Sir Jim Ratcliffe might say, though not getting it right in your home games is almost always a recipe for disaster for any manager.

Beating Copenhagen in the Champions League will have restored some confidence, but United are going to present an altogether different proposition.

It's got all the hallmarks of the classic encounter that this game has always been...
