Thursday was the last day of National Hockey League (NHL) action before the Winter Olympics break, with seven games on the docket. Among the winners were the Pittsburgh Penguins, who returned to winning ways.

Buffalo Sabres 2-5 Pittsburgh Penguins

Needing to get back on the right track, the Pittsburgh Penguins earned a 5-2 success away to the Buffalo Sabres

Avery Hayes and Benjamin Kindel scored twice each to lead the visitors with the goals. Thomas Novak got the other goal for Pittsburgh, who ended a two-game losing skid.

Jason Zucker put the Sabres ahead less than two minutes in, but they failed to hold onto the lead. By the end of the period, they were behind, as Hayes netted both of his goals in the frame.

After Kindel made it 3-1 in the second, Buffalo grabbed one back to start the third period. Unfortunately for them, they could not find a leveller. Instead, Novak and Kindel added late goals to secure the victory for the Penguins.

Pittsburgh jumped ahead of the Sabres in the Eastern Conference into fifth spot. Both teams are on 70 points, though the former have played one less game.

Washington Capitals 4-2 Nashville Predators

Jakob Chychrun did the damage for the Washington Capitals, as the defenseman's two goals and assist helped the hosts to a 4-2 win aganist the Nashville Predators.

Tom Wilson and Pierre-Luc Dubois scored the other two for the Caps, both in the opening 20 minutes. Chychrun then added to the lead 8:42 into the second to make it 3-0 for the home team.

The Predators finally got on the board near the end of the second frame through Jonathan Marchessault. Then, moments into the third, Mike McCarron made it a one-goal game.

Washington held their nerve though, with Chychrun converting a power play 6:49 before the end to complete the scoring for the Caps. They now sit four points out of a playoff spot in the East.

The same applies for the Predators, who also happen to be in 10th place in the Western Conference.
