The 28-year-old has never played alongside any of his new teammates at club level, but "there are many Danes here whom I know from the national team," he says to German media outlet "Handball World".
Bergholt has allegedly settled in well at the North German club, partly thanks to his compatriots, Emil Jakobsen, Simon Pytlick, Lasse Moller, Niclas Kirkelokke, and Kevin Moller. Nevertheless, he tries to communicate in Danish with his teammates as little as possible: "I want to improve my German quickly. It’s been a while since my school days, but I’m already trying to speak a lot of German."
One of the biggest challenges for Bergholt in his new club is filling the void left by Johannes Golla's departure. Johannes Golla left Flensburg after eight years at the club. He officially departed this summer to return to his former club MT Melsungen. "Those are certainly big shoes to fill," he admits, but adds confidently: "I am Emil, and I will bring my own strengths to the table. The priority at this club is clear: we play to win."
He has yet to experience SG’s winning mentality firsthand on the court, though he has witnessed it from the stands as a fan of the "Hölle Nord" (Northern Hell):
"I attended a home game 13 years ago. Back then, players like Thomas Mogensen, Lasse Svan, Tobias Karlsson, and Michael Knudsen were playing," the Danish international recalls of that earlier visit.
Flensburg-Handewitt will start the Bundesliga season on 14 August at home against ThSV Eisenach.
