The second half of the UEFA Champions League's league phase commenced on Tuesday and Wednesday with Matchday 5 football. Here is one stat from each of those games.

Benfica pick up first win while Dortmund dominate

5 - Benfica finally got off the mark in this season's Champions League, earning a 2-0 win at Ajax. Goals in either half did the trick for the two-time winners, who gave themselves a bit of hope in progression. Ajax, enduring a very difficult campaign, have lost their last five home games in Europe, which is their worst run ever.

6 - Galatasaray will believe they missed out on a huge chance following a 1-0 home reverse to Belgium's Union Saint-Gilloise. Striker Promise David scored the only goal of the contest, putting the Brussels-based outfit back in the running for a top 24 spot. It was Union's sixth clean sheet on the road in Europe, and first in the Champions League proper.

9 - Another Canadian forward made the difference on Tuesday night, with Jonathan David netting a stoppage time winner for Juventus in their 3-2 victory over Bodo/Glimt. It was a key first win of the league phase for Juve, who remain unbeaten across nine games versus Norwegian sides (5-4-0). That was also their first success in the Nordic nation, having drawn the four previous outings.

12 - There was quite the surprise at the Etihad, where Manchester City suffered a stunning 2-0 loss at the hands of Bayer Leverkusen. Goals from Alex Grimaldo and Patrik Schick allowed Die Werkself to prevail in what was a maiden clash between the two sides. City have been beaten at home by a German team for the first time in 12 years.

18 - Neither Slavia Praha nor Athletic Club managed to find the back of the net in their clash in the Czech capital. In the end, the match ended goalless, helping neither team in their hopes of getting past this stage. The hosts have failed to score at home in Europe for fourth time in a row. That has not happened in 18 years across two seasons in the UEFA Cup.

7 - Olympique Marseille manage to complete a comeback at home versus Newcastle. Pierre Emerick Aubameyang scored a quick-fire brace within the first five minutes of the second half as the Ligue 1 side grabbed a 2-1 success. The Magpies do not like facing French opposition, with the defeat being their seventh in such a match (3-3-7).

4 - It went from bad to worse for Villarreal, who were well beaten 4-0 away to Borussia Dortmund. Juan Foyth's red card five minutes after the restart proved damaging for The Yellow Submarine, who conceded thrice more after their captain's dismissal. The LaLiga club have not scored in their last four continental contests on the road.

14 - Chelsea picked up a huge win at home, beating Barcelona 3-0. This came just a week after the pair's women's sides faced off in the Women's Champions League, which ended level. That would not occur a second time, as the Blues made the most of a red card from Ronald Araujo in a statement win. Barca have won just once in their last five away matches in Europe, conceding 14 times during that run.

10 - It was back to winning ways for Napoli as the Serie A champions earned a 2-0 success over surprise package Qarabag. Scott McTominay was involved in both goals for the Partenopei, who put themselves firmly in the top 24 with the victory. Qarabag held off the scoreboard on the night, ending a run of 10 straight European matches with a goal.

PSG prevail in eight-goal thriller as Arsenal go top

19 - FC Kobenhavn were able to claim their first victory in this season's UCL after a 3-2 success over Kairat. The Danes had to hold on though, as their Kazakh opponents attempted to stage a late comeback after going down 3-0. However, FCK held on for a crucial three points. It was the 19th home game in a row in Europe where Kobenhavn have found the back of the net.

3 - There was late drama in Cyprus, where Paphos managed to grab a late equaliser to earn a 2-2 draw at home to AS Monaco. A Mohammed Salisu own goal two minutes before the end forced Les Monegasques to split the points. It is the third time Monaco have drawn three games in a group phase, with the previous two coming in the Europa League.

15 - It was goals galore in the French capital, where Paris Saint-Germain rallied to defeat Tottenham 5-3 in a repeat of August's UEFA Super Cup. A Vitinha hat-trick paved the way for Les Parisiens to bounce back from last matchday's defeat. PSG managed to convert from one third of their attempts in the match, hitting 15 shots across the 90 minutes.

8 - It was a very welcome three points for Atalanta, who got goals from Ademola Lookman, Ederson, and Charles De Ketelaere within five minutes in the second half. That brief spell was enough to see them past Eintracht Frankfurt 3-0 in Germany. It was also an eighth Atalanta clean sheet in an away match in the Champions League.

25 - Jose Jimenez played hero for Atletico Madrid as they topped Inter Milan 2-1. The Uruguayan scored a 93rd minute winner to help Los Colchoneros move one point from the top eight. Inter had not dropped a point before this match, but have now lost to a Spanish team for the 25th time in UEFA club competition play (17-15-25).

1 - Liverpool's dismal run continued on Wednesday night as they sunk to a 4-1 reverse at home against PSV Eindhoven. The Dutch champions found the back of the net three times in the second half, giving them a win against the Reds for the second year running. Liverpool suffered to a home defeat versus Dutch opposition for the very first time.

22 - A four-goal haul from Kylian Mbappe did the damage for Real Madrid, who edged Olympiakos Piraeus 4-3. The Greek Super League pacesetters kept themselves in the match, but could not find another goal to claim an unlikely point. Across the sides' head-to-heads, Olympiakos have now conceded a total of 22 goals to the record UCL winners.

17 - Arsenal are now alone at the top of the league phase, with the Gunners topping Bayern Munich 3-1. Two substitutes scored in the second half, ultimately lifting the hosts to three more points and progression to the knockout stages. Arsenal have beaten a German team in Europe for the 17th time.

11 - It was a great win for Sporting CP, who exacted revenge on Club Brugge with a 3-0 success at home. Having lost to the same opponents last fall, the Portuguese champions created more in the clash, scoring twice in the space of seven minutes. The Lisbon-based Sporting have scored against Belgian sides for the 11th time, only failing to do so once.
