Heliovaara and Patten began the summer by reaching the French Open final and taking top spot in the world rankings before winning their second Wimbledon title together in July. The pair are former Australian Open winners, too, yet neither had ever gone beyond the quarter-finals in the men's doubles in New York.
Against the unseeded Cerundolo duo, the American grand slam looked as comfortable as any other, as the Finn and Brit wrapped up the win in one hour and four minutes.
They made an ideal start to the first set, forcing a loss of serve and though Francisco and Juan Manuel held off further break point opportunities, they never came close to breaking back, allowing Heliovaara and Patten to take the opener, 6-4.
The Argentinians made a better start to the second set, only for the number one pairing to force another break in the fifth game and from then on, were completely faultless, not losing a single point for the next three games, taking a 6-2 set win in just 25 minutes and securing the match victory.
In the second round, the men from Helsinki and Essex will take on Italy's Matteo Arnaldi and Germany's Jan-Lennard Struff.
