Holger Rune won't return to action at the ATP tournament in Cincinnati as otherwise planned after sustaining an Achilles tendon injury at the Stockholm Open tournament last year.

The Dane, who has been sidelined by injury since last October, remained on the entry list until Wednesday but no longer appears there. Rune has had to postpone his comeback several times. In the spring, he hoped to compete in the Hamburg Open and subsequently the French Open.

Later, he hoped to return for the grass-court season, but that also proved to be too soon. Since then, he has had hopes to be ready for the US Open, which begins in late August, though it remains uncertain whether that will happen.

On 3 August, his mother and manager told SpilXperten that the current priority is building up Holger Rune's tennis stamina.

"It could take two or three weeks; it’s impossible to say right now. What we can say is that Holger is putting in maximum effort every day to make it happen quickly."

Rune tore his Achilles tendon during a semi-final match last October in a match against the Frenchman Ugo Humbert. Since then, he has undergone an extensive rehabilitation program, including time in Qatar.

The Dane has dropped to number 99 in the world rankings, but thanks to a "protected ranking," he will still gain entry to major tournaments upon his return.
