PSV captain Jerdy Schouten has been ruled out for the rest of the season and the upcoming FIFA World Cup after picking up a severe knee injury in Saturday's game against FC Utrecht, the club have confirmed.

The 29-year-old Schouten twisted his knee in the second half of PSV's 4-3 win and immediately fell to the ground, grasping his knee. The PSV captain had to be stretchered off.

Tests have confirmed that Schouten has suffered a severe anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury that'll require him to get surgery, the club said on Sunday.

“When it happened, I actually knew straight away that something was wrong,” Schouten said in a reaction on the club website.

“You still hold onto a glimmer of hope that it might not be as bad as it seems, but unfortunately, that wasn’t the case. It’s a huge blow right now, but I’ll bounce back quickly. There are great things ahead for PSV and I’ll do everything I can to be part of it all.”

Schouten's injury will sideline him for the remainder of the 2025/26 season and the upcoming FIFA World Cup in Canada, Mexico, and the United States. Schouten has been a mainstay in the Netherlands squad and started every game at the 2024 Euros in Germany.
