South Africa head coach Hugo Broos is confident that his team understands exactly what is required to secure qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup as they prepare for a crucial clash against Nigeria.

Bafana Bafana host the Super Eagles on Tuesday in a high-stakes Group C qualifier, where a win for either side would significantly boost their chances of reaching the World Cup.

Ahead of the big match at Free State Stadium, the Belgian coach says his team will do whatever it takes to get the job done, instead of relying on help from other teams.

“You just have to look at yourself, and I think this is something we have to do here too. We do not have to count on Rwanda, Benin or anyone else (doing us favours) in the group,” Broos told the media.

“We know what we have to do, and we will try to do that, and if we can achieve it, we will qualify for the World Cup.

“I do not look at games and say, ‘oh this team is playing after us and we played before them’. You just have to focus on your own game and that is what we will do. What happened before or afterwards, that is not important if we do what we have to do.”

Although South Africa lead Group C with 16 points, a defeat to Eric Chelle’s side could derail their World Cup hopes, with Benin Republic still in the race for the automatic qualification spot.

Echoing Coach Broos’ determination, goalkeeper Ronwen Williams said the team’s focus is to stay in control of their destiny.

“The most important thing is to get the job done. We do not want any favours from anyone, we want to do things our way,” he said.

“We learnt a hard lesson a few years ago when our destiny was in other team’s hands and obviously things didn’t go our way.

“So, we learnt and grew as a team, and now we want to do things our way and get the job done.”

Both teams played to a 1-1 draw in the first leg at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo. Themba Zwane gave South Africa the lead in the 29th minute, but the three-time African champions hit back to avoid defeat through Fisayo Dele-Bashiru’s equaliser.
