Record-setting dribbles, pinpoint ball control, and relentless pressure: Yan Diomande and Amad Diallo delivered a true statistical masterclass in the Ivory Coast's win over Ecuador on Sunday. We took a closer look at the Elephants’ wingers’ display, which perfectly set the Ivorian team up ahead of their clash with Germany on Saturday.

Ivory Coast kicked off their 2026 World Cup campaign in the best possible way, beating Ecuador 1-0 in their opening match of Group E in Philadelphia, thanks to a last-gasp goal from Amad Diallo. But beyond the result, it was the performance of the Ivorian wingers that truly stood out.

Yan Diomande, who started and was everywhere on the pitch, and Amad, who came on in the 56th minute, gave a lesson in wing play against one of the tournament’s toughest defences. They’ll be the two players to watch against Germany on Saturday evening.

Diomande's masterclass against Hincapie and Pacho

Starting on the right wing, Diomande delivered one of the most complete performances seen so far at this World Cup. Up against Piero Hincapie and Willian Pacho, two of the competition’s standout defenders, the Leipzig player was constantly on the attack throughout the match, especially excelling in carrying the ball forward.

His stats show an exceptional level of activity: 28 ball carries in total, 16 of which reached the edge or inside the Ecuadorian penalty area. What's more, he completed four dribbles out of seven attempts and was remarkably effective in high-pressure defensive zones.

But what truly set his performance apart was his ability to create danger at the end of his runs: Four of his carries directly led to a scoring chance, the highest total in the tournament at that stage, tied with Viktor Gyokeres against Tunisia in Sweden’s 5-1 win.

Flashscore data analyst Daniel Musil summed it up: "Diomande was extremely effective as a ball carrier, with 16 runs into dangerous areas and a four out of six success rate in his dribbles inside and around the penalty box, constantly putting the defence under pressure."

His presence in the penalty area was just as impressive: 12 touches in the box, a tournament record at that stage, along with two shots for 0.2 xG and five key passes - a figure that put him at the top of the list alongside Ruben Vargas, Joshua Kimmich, Ferdi Kadioglu, and Breel Embolo.

His player rating of 8.4 alone summed up the constant threat he posed to the Ecuadorian defence for 90 minutes.

"Diomande’s performance was a true demonstration of how technical quality and athletic power can be combined. Against a defence widely regarded as one of the best in the tournament, he proved that the hype around him is fully justified," added Daniel Musil.

Amad: 34 minutes to change the game

Coming on in the 56th minute with the game still goalless, Amad quickly established himself as the X-factor in the match. In just 34 minutes, the Manchester United winger completed six dribbles out of seven attempts, including two out of three in the box - a tournament record at that stage. He outperformed Julian Quinones, Lee Kang-in, and Tahith Chong, all of whom had five successful dribbles in their opening matches.

To put this in context: Hincapie, one of Group E’s most prominent defenders, was dribbled past four times in the match - one of the worst records among full-backs in the tournament so far.

Of his nine ball carries, three went directly into the opposition box, where he had seven touches after coming on. His two shots generated a total of 0.19 xG.

However, his winning goal, scored in the 90th minute from a cutback by Wilfried Singo, showcased his clinical precision at the decisive moment: his shot produced 0.87 xGOT from an initial chance rated at 0.16 xG.

His rating of 8.6 made him Flashscore's highest-rated player of the match.

Ecuadorian defence caught off guard

What makes these performances even more impressive is the defensive context in which they were achieved. The Ecuador side, led by Hincapie and Pacho, is considered one of the hardest teams to break down in this tournament. Yet the two Ivorian wingers managed to unsettle them time and again, both through their movement off the ball and their individual technical quality in the final third.

With this 1-0 win, Ivory Coast joined Germany at the top of Group E with three points and their first World Cup victory since 2014. The Elephants may have found their main weapon: two wingers capable, on their own, of making even a top-class defence lose control. Die Mannschaft have been warned!
