There were some impressive results in the UEFA Champions League in the competition's exclusive matchweek. The first round of the league phase, with 14 different teams claiming victories. Here is a stat for each team after the opening round of action.

Union enjoy debut victory

3 - One of the stories of matchweek 1 are Belgian champions Union Saint-Gilloise. Promise David's penalty nine minutes in was the first goal of the competition's main rounds this season. The Brussels-based Union went on to beat PSV 3-1 awayLes Unionistes continue their joy in away games in Belgium's big neighbours - they have now won all three matches in the Netherlands after defeating Ajax and Twente in the Europa League last term.

4 - Athletic Bilbao, back in the UCL for the first time in 11 years, were once again beaten by English opposition. This time, it was Arsenal who did the damage, as last season's semi-finalists prevailed 2-0 in the Basque region. Athletic's struggles in the competition continue, having never progressed from this stage. Having been kept off the scoreboard, it was the fourth time they failed to score at home in the UCL proper.

18 - Qarabag pulled off the most remarkable upset of the round. The Azeri champions, playing in just their second campaign in the UCL group phase, came from two goals down to beat Benfica 3-2 on the road. While the Portuguese side went on to make a managerial change, Qarabag celebrated their first-ever win at this stage of the competition. Including qualifiers, they have now scored 18 times in the UCL this season, more than anyone else.

2 - Tuesday did not disappoint in the Champions League, as Juventus and Borussia Dortmund were involved in an incredible 4-4 draw in Turin. In what became an instant UCL classic, the pair traded goals in the second half - all eight goals came in the second 45. The match was their 11th meeting in a UEFA club competition, but just the second time that there was no winner. The other draw between the two came in the 1994/95 UEFA Cup semi-finals, also in Italy.

10 - Real Madrid made it difficult on themselves, but still managed to pull out a 2-1 success at home to Olympique Marseille, maintaining their perfect record over the Ligue 1 side. Two Kylian Mbappe penalties were enough to see the record-champions, who played the final 18 minutes down a man, earn a matchday 1 win. Marseille's struggles versus Spanish teams continue, as that was their 10th defeat to a Primera Division outfit.

16 - Tottenham also got off to a winning start thanks to an early own goal from Luiz Junior. That was enough for them to edge Villarreal 1-0. Spurs, back in the Champions League three years on from their last appearance, have prevailed at home for the 16th time in the UCL proper from 27 games. Overall, their home record is 16-3-8 across seven representations in the competition.

Dominant win for holders, Liverpool leave it late

8 - Slavia Praha were moments away from their first victory in the UCL proper in 18 years. Instead, a Sondre Fet goal in the 90th minute helped Bodo/Glimt to claim a 2-2 draw in the Czech capital in what was their maiden match in the tournament. Failing to hold onto their 2-0 advantage will be seen as a massive disappointment for Slavia. They are now on an eight-match winless run in UEFA club competition play (0-3-5).

5 - Greek champions Olympiakos Piraeus were unable to make the most of their man advantage against Cypriot debutants Paphos. A goalless stalemate where the hosts played over an hour up a man left the visitors the happier of the bunch. While Paphos have now kept three clean sheets on the road in the UCL this term (qualifiers included), Olympiakos have been shut out for the fifth time since the start of last season.

9 - Speaking of clean sheets, Inter Milan have enjoyed playing in the Champions League under the league phase format. The Nerazzurri, 2-0 winners at Ajax in a repeat of the 1971/72 final, have picked up where they left off in the UCL last term regarding keeping teams out. Having conceded just once at this stage last fall, Inter now have nine clean sheets in the UCL since the introduction of the league phase. No side can match that.

17 - UEFA Conference League and FIFA Club World Cup holders Chelsea saw their six-game winning streak in European away matches come to an end in Germany, as Bayern Munich came out on top 3-1 against the Blues. Perhaps this should not be a surprise. After all, Wednesday's win marked the 17th successive season in which Bayern start their UCL campaign with a victory. The last time they failed to do so was in 2008/09 in a 1-1 draw at Bordeaux.

86 - Liverpool and Atletico Madrid did not disappoint in their clash. Despite the Reds going up 2-0 inside 10 minutes, Diego Simeone's Atleti overcame the deficit with nine minutes to go. Unfortunately for them, Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk netted the winner in stoppage time. Treating additional time as the 90th minute, the Merseysiders' first and last goals were a whopping 86 minutes apart.

6 - Paris Saint-Germain started their title defence in convincing fashion, cruising to a 4-0 defeat of Atalanta in the French capital. It was an excellent showing from Les Parisiens, who enjoyed the joint-heaviest win on matchday 1. For La Dea, they lost to PSG for the second time in as many games. Across six European matches versus French clubs, Atalanta have a 2-2-2 record, but six of the eight goals have come at the hands of PSG.

Home sides impress on Thursday

13 - A three-goal haul in the space of 10 minutes towards the end of the first half helped Club Brugge in a convincing 4-1 win over AS Monaco. The visitors failed to convert a penalty in the 10th minute in what was their only shot in the opening half. Les Monegasques continue their away struggles in Europe, as they are now winless in their last four (0-1-3) since beating Bologna 1-0 last November. In that four-game run, Monaco have conceded 13 times, at least thrice in each match.

11 - FC Kobenhavn were on the cusp of a second consecutive win against German opposition. However, Patzelis Hatzidiakos turned the ball into his own net in the 91st minute as they ultimately drew 2-2 with Bayer Leverkusen, concluding a frantic final 10 minutes plus stoppage time. In their four European matches at the Parken this term, Kobenhavn have scored 11 times, with Thursday's tie being the only game not won.

23 - It was a difficult day in the office for Galatasaray on Thursday night, as their early goal at Eintracht Frankfurt was their only joy. By half time, they were down 3-1, with Die Adler prevailing 5-1 in the end. Anyone hoping for the defending Turkish champions to keep a clean sheet in Europe will not like this one. Gala have failed to keep the opponent out of their goal in their last 23 continental clashes, including the loss to Frankfurt.

22 - It was a great evening for Manchester City as they kicked off their UCL league phase campaign with a 2-0 defeat of Serie A champions Napoli. Erling Haaland's goal 11 minutes after the break, his 50th in the competition - paved the way for the Cityzens to come out on top against the 10 men from Naples. City have an incredible record at home in the competition in recent years. That was their 22nd match without defeat at the Etihad in the group stage/league phase, a seven-year run.

37 - Barcelona have had their way with Newcastle once again, beating the Magpies 2-1 away to make it four consecutive wins in the pair's head-to-head. Summer signing Marcus Rashford scored both goals for the Catalans within a space of nine minutes. Barca, who played their 79th match in Europe versus Premier League opposition, claimed their 39th win in those matches, almost six and a half years after their last win.

15 - Sporting CP crashed Kairat Almaty's UCL group phase debut with a 4-1 victory at home. Things were going decently for the Kazakh side, who are trying to successfully defend their domestic title, but they then shipped three goals in three minutes midway through the second half. That ultimately did the damage as they slumped to defeat. In what was their seventh group phase match in a UEFA club competition, Kairat are still winless (0-2-5), having conceded a total of 15 goals.
