After what felt like a lifetime away from action, club football returned at the weekend with a bang and in our first Team of the Weekend since the international break, MLS and Bundesliga stars headline an XI packed full of world-class players from past and present.

As always, we have picked our Team of the Weekend based on Flashscore's in-house player rating system, which draws on key performance metrics and advanced stats. Check out our latest XI below:

Starting in goal, Maarten Vandevoordt is one of three RB Leipzig stars to make the team. The Dutch keeper was in inspired form, somehow keeping Eintracht Frankfurt at bay as Leipzig cruised to a dominant 6-0 Bundesliga thrashing.

In defence, Jacobo Ramon's defensive exploits played a critical part in Como holding on to a valuable 0-0 draw against Serie A leaders Roma. Meanwhile, Maximilian Mittelstadt took his impressive national team form into club football to help Stuttgart claim a clean sheet in their 2-0 win away at Paderborn.

The Bundesliga continues to dominate our team as we move into the midfield, as Antonio Nusa and hat-trick hero Christopher Nkunku played leading roles in Leipzig's big win. After retiring from international football during the break, Lionel Messi returned to action for Inter Miami by scoring a trademark Messi goal as his side thrashed DC United 4-0.

Finally, comes the front three, and it is an all-MLS attack. Luis Suarez joins Inter Miami teammate Messi after his brace, and the Uruguayan is joined by St. Louis City forward Carlo Holse and former Atletico Madrid forward Antoine Griezmann, who is loving life in MLS. The Frenchman scored and assisted for Orlando City in their thrilling 3-2 win against Columbus Crew.

Leading lights

Christopher Nkunku (RB Leipzig) 9.7

Where better to start than with hat-trick hero Nkunku? The funny thing about Nkunku is he has been here, there and everywhere in the last few seasons but only ever looks at home at Leipzig and in the Bundesliga.

The Frenchman made a modest return to Leipzig before coming to life on Saturday evening and inspiring his team to a statement 6-0 win.

Leipzig made a lightning-quick start against Frankfurt, and Nkunku fired the hosts 2-0 up inside five minutes before going on to score a sensational first-half hat-trick to make his inclusion in the Team of the Weekend inevitable. A quiet second half matters little after an electric first 45 minutes where Nkunku ran the show.

Lionel Messi (Inter Miami) 9.2

There are few better at following up a momentous occasion by delivering something sensational days later. Messi made a habit of lighting up the Champions League midweek before returning to LaLiga and taking the headlines once more, and despite his age, he continues to do so.

Just days after making his final Argentina appearance, Messi would have been forgiven if his mind was elsewhere for Inter Miami's MLS clash against DC United in the early hours of Sunday morning.

However, Messi isn't like anyone else, so it should come as little surprise that he scored a brace, which included one vintage Messi strike which found the top corner. The little magician's career might be in its final chapter, but expect him to care about every remaining page in the tale of the greatest career of all time.

Antoine Griezmann (Orlando City)

Griezmann is loving life in Orlando! The French striker surprised many when he left Atletico Madrid and LaLiga for MLS, but he is making the most of the move. And matches like the one against Columbus Crew on Sunday morning are exactly the kind of game Orlando wouldn't have won without him.

Griezmann was the provider for the hosts' first goal in the opening minute of the match as he pulled the ball back inside the box for Harvey Sarajian to fire home.

And then, after Orlando were pegged back in the seventh minute, Griezmann restored their lead in the 14th minute with a dangerous whipped free-kick that somehow made its way past everyone inside the box and into the back of the net.

Orlando went on to win 3-2, but it simply wouldn't have been possible without those two moments of quality early on from the former Atletico man.
