Newly promoted Lyngby Boldklub secured their first win of the new Superliga season on Friday evening, defeating Viborg FF 2–0 in the cathedral city.
The hosts dominated possession, but the visitors defended solidly and were clinical on the few occasions they came close to the Viborg penalty area.
That has been the opposite story in several of Lyngby's earlier matches this season. In several games, the "Royal Blues" have been the better side on the pitch but lacked sharpness in front of the opponent's goal. However, that was not the case on Friday.
While Lyngby has struggled to pick up points, the same cannot be said for Viborg, who arrived on the back of three consecutive wins—most recently a 4–0 victory over FC Copenhagen.
Yet, Lyngby managed to get the better of the in-form side. Consequently, only Sonderjyske and champions AGF remain without a win in the Superliga this season.
Viborg started the match the stronger of the two, dominating possession and creating chances for the first half-hour. The hosts created several promising opportunities, but the final pass or decisive action was often missing before a real threat could materialize.
Out of nowhere, Lyngby struck at the other end. Excellent combination play culminated in Oskar Buur setting up Ísak Thorvaldsson, who put the visitors ahead.
The visitors' opening goal did not change the fact that Viborg controlled possession. However, Lyngby’s defensive organization held firm, limiting the opposition mostly to shots from tight angles or long range.
Lyngby remained infrequent visitors in the Viborg box, but whenever they did venture forward, they looked dangerous. After an hour, Simon Colyn was brought down in the box, and the Canadian converted the penalty himself to extend the lead.
Earlier in the season, Lyngby had twice dropped points in the final minutes of the match, but this time things didn't go wrong.
