Gatti, Vlahovic and Yildiz fire Juventus to three points over Udinese to end winless run

After three defeats in succession, and an eight-match winless run to boot, Juventus finally rediscovered their winning touch as they beat Udinese 3-1 in interim boss Massimo Brambilla’s first game in charge.

After former Juve boss Igor Tudor was dismissed from his post in the build-up to this clash, Brambilla could scarcely have wished for a better start to his tenure.

Only three minutes were on the clock when Dusan Vlahovic was felled in the area by Saba Goglichidze, and the Serb dusted himself forward to step forward from 12 yards to send Maduka Okoye the wrong way and fire Juve into an early lead.

The hosts looked like a side with a point to prove in the early stages, and they thought they’d doubled their advantage midway through the first half. Weston McKennie laid the ball on a play for Vlahović to double his tally for the evening, but the offside flag cut short his celebrations.

Udinese did well from there to stem the Juventus flow, but although they were able to finally get a foothold in the game, getting back on level terms was always likely to be a much sterner task.

They were fortunate that it wasn't made twice as difficult at the break, as Okoye twice kept them in the game before the break.

He produced a fine save to first deny Filip Kostic, before his Serbian compatriot Vlahovic beat the offside trap but saw his effort repelled by the feet of the Udinese stopper. Those saves proved to be monumental in the game, as Udinese equalised on the stroke of half-time.

A bout of penalty box pinball saw Juve fail to clear their lines, and Nicolo Zaniolo punished them in brutal fashion by curling a loose ball into the bottom corner.

Juventus’ second-half performance was more in keeping with what they’ve produced throughout this season as they struggled to get any meaningful hold of the game. For all the dominance they still managed in a possessional sense, it was a set-piece which yielded their best opening of the half around the hour mark.

McKennie rose highest in the area to head goalwards, and as his effort deflected off a Udinese player and looked destined to find the back of the net, a smart reflex stop from Okoye kept him out.

That only proved to be a temporary reprieve for the visitors, who fell behind when Andrea Cambiaso’s recycled corner found its way to the far post and Federico Gatti climbed highest to power home a header at the far post.

The hosts were never likely to rest easily, having already squandered the lead, but Kenan Yıldız almost made the closing stages a little more comfortable when his strike looked to be heading for the roof of the net, but once again, Okoye bailed Udinese out, before he cannoned an effort off the post moments later.

Okoye’s heroics had given his side a platform to potentially find a late equaliser, but it never transpired, as they fell to only their third defeat of the Serie A campaign. Victory was huge for Juventus, who are firmly back in the European race after adding a third through Yıldız from the penalty spot in the dying moments.
