The numbers that detail how Wolves could become the worst Premier League team in history

New Year, and hopefully a new start for Wolverhampton Wanderers.

That's because they've not won a Premier League match in 251 days (and counting), a period in which they've had two different managers, two sporting directors, one technical director (and a partridge in a pear tree?!).

The worst-ever start to a Premier League season

The Black and Golds have also conceded 48 goals since then (40 this season), enduring the most awful start to their 2025/26 Premier League campaign.

Unless there is a swift turnaround in fortunes, Rob Edwards could be leading them to a record-breaking season for all the wrong reasons.

Edwards' own appointment was a controversial one, coming as it did after he left a high-flying Middlesbrough in the Championship in November 2025, and on the back of only being appointed to the role on Teeside in June.

Whilst Edwards' former connection to the club as a player clearly held obvious cachet for him, it was right that questions were asked as to the 43-year-old's integrity, and why he'd really want to jump ship at the point when Wolves were rock bottom of the Premier League - where they've remained since his appointment.

"My best years as a player were here. This opportunity and this job is something I've always wanted and dreamed of," he espoused at his unveiling at Molineux, by way of explanation.

"The supporters are angry, and I get it. I understand the frustration, and I won't tell fans what to do. I'd love them to support the players, but they have to see effort and commitment in return.

"It's the toughest league in the world, and we come into a team who haven't won since April. I'm not anticipating a quick turnaround."

No wins in 19 games

At the halfway point of the season, the Midlands-based outfit is still without a win, with their meagre total of three points coming by way of three draws, the last of which was in their final game of 2025 against Manchester United (1-1).

The only other two teams that have failed to beat them in the league during the current campaign are Brighton at the start of October, and Tottenham Hotspur at the end of September, both games also finishing 1-1.

Before that draw at Old Trafford, the two points gained were the joint worst ever accrued after 15 games of a season, in the entire history of the top four divisions of English football.

Unless Wolves have an incredible January transfer window and/or find some form from somewhere, they're on course to become the worst Premier League club since the English top-flight was rebranded in the early 90s.

Derby hold record for lowest points in a season

That dubious honour is held by the Derby County side from 2007/08.

Their 11 points in total remain the current record low; however, if Wolves were to replicate the first half of their 25/26 season in the second set of 19 games, they'd end up with just six points.

To give a little more context to their plight, they are currently earning points at the rate of 0.16 per game, markedly less than Derby's 0.29 per game in 07/08, and no team has ever had a lower points total than Wolves at the turn of the year.

Of the other eight teams that had nine points or less at the start of the new year (Sheffield United (twice), Derby, Aston Villa, Sheffield Wednesday, Southampton, Sunderland, Bolton and West Bromwich Albion), all were relegated at the end of the season, so that certainly doesn't bode well for Wolves.

Wolves could equal most-ever defeats too

It isn't just a lack of points that could put them in the all-time record books, either.

16 of their 19 games have been losses, meaning that if they lost another 13, they'd equal the 29 defeats which befell that underperforming Rams side.

Watford's awful 2021/22 season saw them lose on 27 separate occasions, whilst Huddersfield Town (2018/19) and Sheffield United (2023/24) both lost 28, fortunately stopping just short of adding their names to an unwanted list.

The way Wolves are playing suggests they'll certainly run all of those teams close, but it goes without saying that no one associated with the club will want to have to run the gauntlet of embarrassment for the remainder of their careers, should they equal or top Derby's total losses.

Further, if Wolves were to be relegated by March 29th, they'd also take Derby's mantle for being the team that dropped down into the Championship at the earliest date. Southampton didn't go down until April 6th (2025); however, they are the earliest team to be relegated in Premier League history in terms of the number of games remaining (seven; Derby had six).

Can Edwards have a future as a manager?

Edwards' managerial career might also go up in flames if he's not able to turn things around.

Since taking over on November 12th, he's seen his side score just four goals in eight games, though if one wanted to put a positive spin on that, one could argue that four of the losses were by only one goal and against teams in the Premier League's top four.

The defeat at Arsenal, for example, only came about because of two own goals, one of which came deep into stoppage time at the end of the game, after Wolves had equalised at the Emirates Stadium in the 90th minute.

Such fine margins...
