Pep's 1000th game could see Man City and Liverpool stars shatter Premier League records

One of the Premier League's most recent fierce rivalries takes place again on Sunday, as Arne Slot and his Liverpool side head to the Etihad Stadium to play against Pep Guardiola's swashbuckling Man City outfit.

The Reds are unbeaten against City in their last four encounters, and if the hosts can turn the tide, it will be their first league victory over them since April 2023.

Liverpool's renewed confidence

To put that little run into context, free-scoring City have only managed to score two goals against Liverpool in that time, whilst the Reds have scored six.

After beating Aston Villa last time out, there should at least be some renewed confidence from Liverpool, who had endured a four-match losing run in the league prior to that much-needed victory.

Despite the loss of those 12 points, they still currently sit in third on 18 points, just a point behind City, who won their fourth consecutive game at home when beating an expansive Bournemouth side 3-1 last weekend.

The Reds have won two and lost four of their last six matches, and away from home, they've earned six points from 15 available. On a three-match losing streak away from Anfield, another defeat would mean four in a row for the first time since 2012 under Kenny Dalglish.

City statistically EPL's best since April

City have four wins and one loss in their five Premier League home games this season, and, in terms of current form, City have won four, drawn one and lost one of their last six.

In fact, Sunday's hosts have actually been the Premier League’s best team in results terms since the beginning of April.

42 points won (13 victories in 19 games, three draws, three losses) is the most in the English top-flight since then, and they've also won nine of their 10 matches at the Etihad during that time, losing the other.

Everything would therefore point to another home win for Guardiola's side, but as everyone knows, football has a strange habit of throwing curveballs when they are least expected.

Salah and Haaland could break records

The memories of this fixture last season will remain, of course, when both Mohamed Salah and Dominik Szoboszlai were on target in a 2-0 Liverpool victory, and that'll arguably be used as motivation ahead of the match.

This season, Salah hasn't been in quite the same form as usual, and that can be seen by his current goals output in the English top-flight of just four goals in 10 games.

He could, however, break Wayne Rooney’s record for the most Premier League goal involvements at a single club (276) if he gets a goal or assist on Sunday, and with nine goals and six assists against City already, no other player in the Premier League has more.

City's Erling Haaland, who has surged ahead in the top scorer stakes with an incredible 13 to his name, has also registered the most Expected Goals (10.23 xG), taken the most shots (43) and had the most shots on target (25) in 2025/26.

He's averaging a goal every 66 minutes, scoring from 30.2% of his total shots and 52.4% of his big chances.

What's more, he only needs two more goals to become the fastest in Premier League history to reach a century of goals.

The record of 124 games is currently held by Alan Shearer; however, were the Norwegian to bag a brace on Sunday, he'd have reached 100 goals in just 107 matches. Where better to set such a record?!

1000 up for Guardiola

Any City goals are unlikely to come from set-pieces as they're the only side in the league to score all 20 of their goals from open play this season, the first time that's ever happened in the opening 10 matches of any league season.

Guardiola’s penchant for having his teams pass the opposition off the park can also be seen in the fact that they lead the way with 174 sequences that have at least 10 passes or more, but that might well suit Liverpool better, given that they've struggled against teams that have been more direct this season.

Sunday's match will also be extra special for the Catalan, who will be overseeing his 1,000th match as a manager (and 550th as Man City boss) since taking the Barcelona B job in June 2007.

In his 999 games so far, he’s won a preposterous 715, giving him an outstanding 71.6% win percentage over those 18 years.

Liverpool will undoubtedly be out to spoil the party, and were they to do just that, it would be the first time they'd have won consecutive away games against City since between 1987 and 1991.
