One huge area needs addressing if Man United want Harry Kane to lead their line

So far this season, Bayern Munich ace Harry Kane has already scored an astonishing 13 goals and provided three assists in just seven games in all competitions.

He is therefore already well ahead of schedule in his third season in German football, after managing 36 goals and eight assists in 32 Bundesliga games in 2023/24, followed by 26 goals and eight assists in 31 matches last season.

98 goals in 103 games

In all competitions since arriving in Bavaria, the England captain has a ridiculous total of 98 goals scored and 27 assists provided in 103 games played.

Those numbers would be considered elite for a player in their peak years, but given Kane is already 32 years of age, it makes his output that much more impressive.

Kane has been an elite marksman throughout his playing career, but rarely gets the kudos or credit that comes with being the record scorer for Tottenham Hotspur and the England national team.

It's as if those achievements need to be denigrated in some way, and it appears to be happening again now because suggestions that the Bundesliga perhaps isn't the strongest are facetious at best.

The striker still managed to score 213 goals in the Premier League before leaving for Bayern, the supposed 'best league in the world,' leaving him just 47 behind Alan Shearer's all-time record of 260 goals.

Premier League comeback on the cards?

Should Kane, whose contract at Bayern ends in 2027, decide to return to the English top-flight, there's every reason to think he'll earn himself that record too before he hangs up his boots.

And if rumours are correct, a move could be on the cards sooner rather than later.

That's because, not for the first time, it's understood Manchester United are showing a very strong interest indeed in the centre-forward's services.

Though there's been no comment from either Kane himself or Bayern, it's true that they would still be able to command a reasonably decent fee for him next summer rather than losing him for significantly less in January 2027 or for nothing at all at the end of that 2026/27 season.

For some years now, United have struggled to land a centre-forward like Kane that's virtually a guarantee of goals.

A player that can be relied upon to get at least 15-20 goals, year in and year out.

Sesko struggling at United

Benjamin Sesko has recently arrived from RB Leipzig to try and fulfil that role, but the 22-year-old is already feeling the pressure of being the main man this season.

To date, he's played six games in a red shirt but has yet to register a goal or an assist. For a player who cost the Red Devils the princely sum of £73.7m (including add-ons), that's not the best start to life at a new club.

It shouldn't really be a surprise to those who watched Rasmus Hojlund struggling week after week, however.

The highly-rated Danish striker only managed 26 goals in 95 games, of which only 14 came in the Premier League in 62 matches.

Only Marcus Rashford in the last five years could be said to have hit anything like a purple patch after his 30 goals during the 2022/23 campaign, and arguably many of the chances to score he created himself.

And therein lies the crux of the matter and something which needs to be addressed quickly.

Crosses have been United's problem for a decade

How often does a Man Utd player put in a cross for the centre-forward to either run onto or fire/head home without a moment's thought?

If we take a broad look from 2014/15 up to the present day, at least 14 players have provided over 100 crosses into the box.

To give some context as to just how poor some of those have been, Bruno Fernandes has made 675 in his time at the club, but only 111 of those crosses have found their target.

Only 30 of Paul Pogba's 177 crosses were successful, and just 24 of Alejandro Garnacho's 194 made it to the intended destination.

7802 crosses were made by all Man Utd players over the past 10 seasons, with 6265 of them being unsuccessful, including 1073 which were blocked.

Just 1537 from open play found their target.

United even set a Premier League record of 81 crosses in a game against Fulham back in 2014 - but still didn't win the match.

Time for the major problem area to be corrected

Kane may no longer be in his prime, but he knows where the goal is, and when you have players such as Michael Olise and Luis Diaz putting the ball on a plate for you, it makes all the difference.

Fans of United's rivals, Manchester City, once had a saying about striker Shaun Goater: 'Feed the goat and he will score,' and very often he did. Football can be that simple sometimes.

If the England man does decide that Old Trafford will be his next playing destination, then United's board and manager need to reassess who is best suited to feed Kane and devise a playing system to work around his excellence in front of goal.

That's because if the status quo doesn't change, then even someone as good as Kane will go the same way as Hojlund and others did - and where Sesko is also heading at this point.
