Newcastle face serious possibility of Nick Woltemade leaving in the summer

Newcastle United are increasingly likely to cut their losses on Nick Woltemade this summer, with sources indicating the striker will “almost certainly” leave if the right proposal arrives.

The club are preparing to make crunch decisions as part of a club overhaul, at a time when they are fighting to retain key players.

The futures of Anthony Gordon, Sandro Tonali and Bruno Guimaraes are central to how the summer evolves, but Flashscore sources describe how the club could also be prepared to sanction a departure for Woltemade at a fee significantly lower than the one paid to sign the German forward.

Woltemade joined at a time when they needed to replace Alexander Isak, and was viewed internally as a player capable of becoming a long-term focal point in attack. His profile made him an attractive investment, but his situation has changed considerably over the course of the season and his status in the squad is not quite where it was hoped to be.

While there were early flashes of encouragement, Woltemade has struggled to establish himself as an important figure in Eddie Howe’s plans.

Inconsistency has contributed to a campaign that has not developed, and they are expected to have discussions about how the situations opens up.

Woltemade would not be content with being a bit-part player, and attention must turn towards making sure all parties make a quick decision on how to move forwards.

Sources suggest a departure has become plausible, with the expectation that the club would have to consider a fee well below the £69 million price agreed to sign him from Stuttgart.

The prospect of taking a financial hit is not considered ideal, but there appears to be an acceptance that recouping the full investment is unrealistic under current circumstances.

And Newcastle have plans to make a new attacking signing, too.

Interest could emerge from multiple markets across Europe if Newcastle formally open the door to offers for Woltemade. A return to Germany may appeal, although the player’s situation is expected to attract wider attention, too.
