A year ago, Carlos Baleba became a top Manchester United target, but his asking price made a deal almost impossible.

Now, the midfielder is on the verge of joining the club for a fee that would have been difficult to imagine when they first explored his availability.

United have finally found a way through for a player they have continued to assess over the past year, with Baleba's profile, personality, mentality and potential fit remaining attractive even as they explored a host of alternative midfield options.

The 22-year-old is close to completing his move from Brighton in a deal worth £65 million up front plus £5 million in add-ons.

United first wanted Baleba last season - and returned for him again in January - only to be told by Brighton that it would take more than £100 million to sign him. That effectively ended their hopes of doing a deal, as they have never paid that amount for any player.

When United revisited the situation at the beginning of this summer, Brighton again indicated a big valuation, but there was a growing sense that the club might be willing to entertain a sale.

The Reds kept their foot in the door while exploring several alternatives. Ederson, Elliot Anderson, Sandro Tonali, Mateus Fernandes, Aurelien Tchouameni and Eduardo Camavinga were all considered in the early stages of the window.

United strengthened their midfield by signing Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans at attractive price points, allowing them to wait for the right opportunity for one more addition.

And that opportunity ultimately became Baleba.

United have spent the past year assessing not just his ability but his wider profile, including his suitability to the team, personality, mentality and true value in the market. After negotiations started to open up this summer, they were able to agree a fee that would have seemed out of reach at any stage in the past year.

Baleba has been keen on joining United since their first approach and remained eager to make the move. Personal terms have been agreed in principle, with his camp understood to have agreed a five-year contract.

There had been questions over his consistency after his form dipped at Brighton last season, but United have maintained their belief in his qualities.

His arrival is a significant final addition to the midfield and leaves Michael Carrick's side better equipped for the demands of the season ahead.
