West Ham United hope to spark a bidding war for midfielder Mateus Fernandes this summer, with the aim of commanding a fee in excess of £80 million for the midfielder.

Fernandes has emerged as a key target for Manchester United as they assess midfield reinforcements ahead of the new season.

As previously reported, the 21-year-old is viewed as an attractive profile due to his Premier League experience and long-term potential, with talks already underway with representatives.

The former Southampton midfielder is not the only option under consideration at Old Trafford, but he is among a shortlist of Premier League proven talent that also includes Bournemouth's Alex Scott. Elliot Anderson and Sandro Tonali have also been considered, but appear unlikely, while Sander Berge has been mentioned as an alternative.

Fernandes is understood to be a popular recommendation within Manchester United’s recruitment department, and there is a belief he is interested, too.

United have begun exploring the parameters of a potential deal, but there is caution over valuation. While there is an acceptance that West Ham will seek to make a profit on a player they signed less than a year ago, there are concerns about paying significantly above market value.

Fernandes joined West Ham from Southampton in August 2025 in a deal worth around £40 million and, despite the club’s relegation from the Premier League, has continued to attract interest from some of Europe’s biggest sides.

Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain are both monitoring his situation, while Arsenal and another unnamed Premier League club are also believed to have made tentative enquiries, sources say.

PSG’s interest comes as the French champions continue to assess a number of midfield targets, including Ayyoub Bouaddi.

The level of interest is strengthening West Ham’s belief that they could double their investment in Fernandes. Sources indicate there is confidence within the club that a sale worth around £80 million is achievable if competition for his signature intensifies.

It reflects the club’s current thinking as they begin planning for life in the Championship, following relegation last season.

But the stance could create complications for Man United, who ideally want key additions in place before the start of pre-season as they look to complete the bulk of summer business early.
