Why Real Madrid's Eduardo Camavinga would be a valuable addition to Liverpool's midfield

Given just how much Liverpool have struggled in 2025/26, after what was an epic title-winning season in the previous campaign, it's obvious that the Reds are going to dip into their transfer kitty again this summer.

Whilst it isn't clear at this point exactly who is going to come to Anfield or leave the famous old ground for pastures new, there will need to be some movement if the club want to get back on top of their perch at the summit of the English top-flight.

Who stays and who goes at Liverpool?

Arne Slot may or may not still be at the helm for the start of the 2026/27 campaign, and it will be an interesting exercise to see who he - or his replacement - decides to bring in or let go.

Though Mohamed Salah looks like he's wading through treacle in most games lately, he remains a valued member of the Liverpool squad, so it isn't a foregone conclusion that he'll swan off to the Saudi Pro League after the World Cup is done and dusted.

With 40 goals already conceded in the Premier League, it's arguable that, in fact, the club should be concentrating on more defensive reinforcements in the first instance.

However, despite being able to call upon the services of Alexis Mac Allister, Dominic Szoboszlai, Ryan Gravenberch and Florian Wirtz in midfield, too, there has evidently been some dynamism missing in the middle of the park at times.

Liverpool rumoured to want Camavinga

That would go some way to explaining why there are strong rumours currently doing the rounds which suggest that the Reds are interested in Real Madrid's excellent midfielder, Eduardo Camavinga.

What's more, it's understood that Los Blancos are seemingly willing to listen to offers for the 23-year-old Angolan, who has also featured for the French national team.

It's believed that an offer in the region of £43 million would be enough to tempt the Spanish giants into selling the player, and Liverpool have been long-term admirers.

What's noticeable with regard to Camavinga's appearances for the Santiago Bernabeu outfit is that they've drastically decreased over the past couple of seasons...

Appearances have dropped off

For example, in the current LaLiga campaign, though he has played 20 times so far, only 12 of those have been as a starter.

Similarly, in 2024/25, he started only 11 of 19 appearances, meaning that in the last two league seasons, he has played just 2,239 minutes in the league.

In 2022/23 alone, he played 2,001 minutes in the Spanish top-flight, so it's abundantly clear that his managers began to favour a midfield that includes the likes of Jude Bellingham, Federico ValverdeAurelien Tchouameni and Arda Guler.

Indeed, he has even been shoehorned in at left-back in some games, and whilst he deserves credit for that team ethic, it's obvious that he's wasted there.

Improved discipline

Camavinga's disciplinary record has improved immeasurably, though, with just nine yellow cards and one red in all competitions over the past two seasons.

In two of his previous campaigns with Real, he'd picked up nine yellows just in LaLiga, and whilst the Premier League is known for its physicality, Camavinga's speed in transitional play often keeps him out of trouble in this regard.

There's an ease and an elegance to his gait when he moves through the gears, and with a passing accuracy that's been around the 90% mark in LaLiga for the entire time he's been at Real, here is a player who sets the tempo and is always in control of his area of the pitch.

Another area in which he excels is with regards to his success in one-on-one encounters.

Strong in the tackle

Though lithe and athletic, Camavinga is also as strong as an ox, and a current duel success percentage of 63.2% in the current league season is more than adequate. This figure has also been as high as 68.9% (in last season's Copa del Rey), and complements his success when tackling an opponent (75% in this season's Champions League).

A player who's also adept at winning back possession, the 23-year-old can be considered an all-rounder, and at such a young age, still has plenty to achieve in the game.

Though it isn't clear at this stage if Camavinga himself is willing to swap the Bernabeu for Anfield, given that he'd likely be brought in to shake things up in the Liverpool midfield and would almost certainly be fighting to play in the XI, he doesn't seem to have a cogent argument as to why staying in Madrid would be to his benefit.

Even if there's plenty of time for any deal to be done, the Reds' recruitment team have shown before that they like to get ahead of the curve, and the question they should be asking at this point is whether they really can afford to wait and potentially pass this great transfer up.

Follow Camavinga more closely than ever by adding him to your favourites!
