Getafe ended a three-match winless run at home (D2, L1) after grinding out a hard-fought 2-1 win over a struggling Girona side at the Coliseum.

The Azulones were eager to compound the misery on a floundering Girona side still searching for their first away league win of the season, with chances falling to Coba da Costa and Luis Milla in the opening exchanges.

Michel’s team looked to pounce on the counter-attack in response, as Joel Roca was denied by David Soria at the end of a swift break, before Axel Witsel looked to take matters into his own hands with an audacious acrobatic attempt, only to fire over after being spotted by Viktor Tsyhankov.

That was the extent of the goalscoring action in a largely lacklustre opening 45 minutes, with both sides only mustering three shots on target between them.

Perhaps sensing a game there for the taking, Getafe began brightly after the restart, with Paulo Gazzaniga forced into a fine one-handed stop to parry away Mauro Arambarri’s deflected strike.

Abdel Abqar then headed wide from Diego Rico's inswinging set piece, and the sense that an opening goal was coming only grew.

Come it finally did in the 72nd minute via a set-piece, when Mario Martin powered home a brilliant header from Milla’s delivery, leaving the Blanquivermells with that familiar sinking feeling once again.

Vladyslav Vanat looked to change that narrative as he bore down on goal, but his subsequent strike was comfortably saved by Soria, and Borja Mayoral rubber-stamped the victory late on with a rather scruffy finish at the far post from Alex Sancris’ ball across the box.

Cristhian Stuani netted what proved to be a late consolation from the penalty spot, but there would be no grandstand finish in the outskirts of the Spanish capital.

This was a fine night’s work from Jose Bordalas’ men, who moved up to sixth in the table after winning consecutive LaLiga matches against Girona for the first time in their history. They will be dreaming of European football next season, while the Blanquivermells’ appearance in last season’s Champions League seems like a lifetime ago now. They remain at the bottom of the table, in what could be a dogfight to maintain their top-flight status.
