The Rwanda Football Federation (FERWAFA) has appointed Stephen Constantine as the head coach of Rwanda senior men national team (Amavubi) and the Rwanda U-23 national team on a two-year renewable contract.

The 63-year-old English tactician will take charge of Rwanda for the second time, and he arrives to replace Adel Amrouche, who was fired early in January.

Amrouche was in charge of Rwanda from March last year, following the departure of German coach Torsten Spittler, who left the role in December 2024.

In a statement, FERWAFA said the appointment of Constantine reflects Rwanda’s continued commitment to strengthening football structures and achieving excellence on the continental and global stage.

Constantine to start role on Monday

“His appointment reflects Rwanda’s continued commitment to strengthening football structures and achieving excellence on the continental and global stage,” read part of the communication from FERWAFA.

The statement added: “Constantine will assume the Amavubi coaching role on Monday, March 16, 2026, and will work with the existing team to prepare the upcoming FIFA Series Tournament due later this month in Kigali City.

“FERWAFA expresses full confidence in Coach Constantine’s leadership, technical expertise, and dedication to advancing Rwanda’s football ambitions.

“The Federation calls upon all stakeholders, partners, supporters, and football fans to unite behind the national team as we embark on this important and transformative journey.”

The statement concluded: “Further details regarding the appointment, technical plans, and strategic roadmap will be shared during an official press conference scheduled for next week.”

Constantine will prepare Rwanda for FIFA Series

It will be the Englishman’s second tenure with the Amavubi, following his first one in 2014-2015. He became manager of Rwanda in May 2014, taking charge of his first match in June.

After taking charge, Constantine stated his aim was to build a team strong enough to challenge for the 2016 African Nations Championship (CHAN), which Rwanda were due to host..

Rwanda attained their highest ever ranking, of 68th position under his reign, but later that month he was linked with a return to India as their new national manager, and in early January 2015 he was offered the position.

Constantine will officially start work on March 16th to prepare the team ahead of the FIFA Series which will take place March 26-31 in Kigali. Rwanda are placed in the same group with Kenya, Estonia and Grenada in the FIFA Series.

The 2026 FIFA Series will be the second edition of the FIFA Series, an invitational Association football tournament promoted by FIFA that features friendly matches between national teams from different continental confederations.

The men’s section of the 2026 edition will feature nine different four-team series taking place across eight host countries during the FIFA window of 25–31 March.

Constantine has previously handled India, Nepal, Malawi, Sudan, and Pakistan. He is now expected to leave his role at Cypriot club APEA Akrotiri to start his second tenure as Rwanda coach.

Constantine was born on October 16, 1962 in London. He is of Greek-Cypriot descent.

He played in the United States for the Pennsylvania Stoners and the New York Pancyprian-Freedoms, and retired from playing at the age of 26, following a serious knee injury.
