Robin van Persie's Feyenoord were given a positive break after scans on Shaqueel van Persie's came back positive, the club confirmed on Saturday.

"Shaqueel van Persie's injury has been examined further by doctors. The medical findings are positive and indicate that surgery is not necessary," the club said in a statement on Saturday.

"The rehabilitation process has already begun, and it is realistic to expect that he will be able to play again this season."

Shaqueel van Persie, 19, went down with a knee injury in Feyenoord's 2-1 UEFA Europa League loss to Real Betis on Thursday. The forward landed awkwardly and hyperextended his right knee, immediately raising concerns on the sidelines, where father Robin looked on worriedly.

Following the loss, Robin van Persie said it was "not looking good" for Shaqueel, who had to be stretchered off the pitch of Estadio de la Cartuja.

With Shaqueel van Persie out for the foreseeable future, the 19-year-old joins an already overcrowded physio room in Rotterdam. Key players Givairo Read, Ayase Ueda, Sem Steijn, Tsuyoshi Watanabe, Anel Ahmedhodzic, and Gijs Smal already missed the game against Real Betis, but could return against PSV.

Feyenoord play a crucial away game at champions PSV on Sunday. With a win, Feyenoord close the gap to 11 points with 13 rounds to go. With a loss, however, PSV look set to reel in a third-straight Eredivisie title.
