Ajax played an uninspiring game against last year's finalists and created just one clear-cut chance, which Mika Godts failed to convert on. The Eredivisie giants held Inter in check in the first half, but still headed into the break with a 1-0 deficit after attempting just three shots at Yann Sommer's goal themselves.
Ajax took 25 minutes to record their first attempt in the second half, but striker Wout Weghorst complimented his team nonetheless.
"I think we can definitely keep up in the first half and play excellently," Weghorst told Ziggo Sport.
"To be honest, I think we're actually the better team. Ultimately, we get a really good chance with Mika (Godts), which of course has to go in. Then they score 0-1 from a corner."
The Netherlands international continued to say that he thought Ajax could've gotten more from their loss.
"It's a real shame, because I think we could have achieved more. We were dominant and good in the duels. We put them under pressure at times and built up well. The plan we had worked out pretty well."
Disappointment
Wout Weghorst played a fairly anonymous game, primarily utilising his height - the striker engaged in seven aerial duels, three of which he won. He recorded no attempts at goal from 28 touches and completed 12 of his 20 passes.
Weghorst was visibly disappointed when he was being subbed out for the returned Kasper Dolberg.
"I felt like I played well. I felt good, I felt strong. It was a nice evening, with the crowd and the atmosphere. So, of course, you feel sorry that you get taken off."
