After an intense, thrilling, and heart-stopping final matchday of the Champions League league phase, it’s time to answer some of the questions many of us have. Chief among them: who were the top scorers of the group stage?

There’s only one valid answer - a star who has shone brighter than anyone before at this stage, yet still couldn’t help his team finish in the top eight.

It’s been eight remarkable matchdays in terms of attacking performances from most of the 36 teams. So much so that, after the 61 goals scored on the final day - with all matches played simultaneously - this season has set a new record for average goals per game, surpassing last year’s 3.26 (470 goals in 144 matches).

The new mark stands at 3.38 (487 goals in 144 games).

Some of the game’s biggest stars have played their part in achieving this record. Leading the way is Mbappe, who finished as the group stage’s top scorer with 13 goals.

He already had a commanding lead with 11 goals - four more than Harry Kane - matching the historic record held by Cristiano Ronaldo.

But just to be sure, and to surpass his idol, he added even more goals in Lisbon.

Mbappe’s goals

Curiously, his efforts weren’t enough for Real Madrid to advance as one of Europe’s top eight after their collapse in Lisbon against Mourinho’s Benfica.

Mbappe kicked off this campaign with a brace on matchday one against Marseille, followed by a hat-trick away at Kairat Almaty.

He had to wait until the fifth round, against Olympiacos, to satisfy his hunger with an incredible four goals - all of Madrid’s - in a 4-3 win.

In the penultimate game, against Monaco, he scored another two. And he added two more against Benfica to reach 13, setting an all-time record.

Behind the Frenchman is the English striker from Bayern Munich, who also found the net on the final day with his eighth goal of the tournament, crucial for Bayern’s win in Eindhoven.

Third place goes to Erling Haaland, who was back among the goals to help City beat Galatasaray.

Osimhen (Galatasaray), Martinelli (Arsenal), Gordon (Newcastle), Guruzeta (Athletic), Fermin (Barcelona), Barnes (Newcastle), and Vitinha (PSG) round out the top 10 scorers of the Champions League group stage.
