Former Denmark international and FC Copenhagen captain Lukas Lerager became a Widzew player on Wednesday. The 32-year-old midfielder is the second addition to the Widzew Lodz during the winter break.

Lerager has signed a contract with the Polish club that will run until June 2028, with an option to extend for another season.

The central midfielder spent the last four seasons at FC Copenhagen. He was a key figure for the current Danish champions, and in some matches wore the captain's armband. In total, he made 219 appearances for the club, scoring 32 goals. In the fall season, he played in 17 league matches and five Champions League group stage matches.

Previously, he played for Danish sides AB and Viborg FF, Belgian club Zulte Waregem, French team Girondins Bordeaux, and Italian side FC Genoa. He has also earned 10 caps for the Denmark national team, with whom he took part in the 2018 World Cup.

"I'm happy to have signed with Widzew. When you change clubs after so many years, you think about what your next step should be. For me, it was very important to join a team, I would want to play for. I saw the ambitions Widzew has and the community that supports the club. I'm glad I can continue my career here," said Lukas Lerager on the club's official website.

"I never give up and always play for my teammates. I have a lot of energy and I'm a box-to-box midfielder. I communicate well with both the team and the coach, so I can pass on his instructions to the other players. I hope I can bring this to Widzew as well, which will help us win games, because that's what matters most," added the Dane.

"We're very pleased to welcome a player of such caliber to the team. Over the past years, Lukas Lerager has been a key player for a side regularly winning the Danish Championship, and in the past, he has performed successfully in Ligue 1 and Serie A. As recently as the autumn, he was a starter in the Champions League group stage. We believe Lukas will bring Widzew not only a wealth of skill but also the vital experience we need," said Dariusz Adamczuk, the club's Sports Director.

Earlier during the ongoing league break, Norwegian Christopher Cheng from Sandefjord Fotball also joined the Łódź club.

Widzew have collected 20 points from 18 league matches so far and currently sit 13th in the Ekstraklasa table. The team from Lodz will begin preparations for the second half of the season on 5 January. Their plans include a training camp in Belek, Turkey, and four friendly matches.
