The Champions League semi-finalists have been decided after the quarter-final second legs wrapped up last night. In the end, all four teams that were leading at the end of the first leg progressed, leaving PSG, Arsenal, Inter and Barcelona as the last four standing.

The moral of this week's Champions League story is that there are only so many times Real Madrid can stage a dramatic Champions League comeback at the Santiago Bernabeu; at some point, reality was always going to catch up with them.

There has been no better team than Los Blancos in recent Champions League knockouts at producing dramatic comeback wins at home. However, Carlo Ancelotti's side were rarely the better team for much of the two legs, and when their luck finally ran out, they were more disjointed than ever.

It's time for a new top dog - at least for now.

Star player - Declan Rice

A week after scoring a pair of incredible free-kicks, Declan Rice has won back-to-back player of the match awards against Real Madrid.

Just let that sink in.

Rice must be feeling on top of the world after two different but equally impressive and assured displays against the most successful club in European history.

Whilst Rice stole the headlines at the Emirates last Tuesday evening, the England international displayed another brilliant display last night as Arsenal completed the double over the holders with a 2-1 away win

Rice ran the show from minute one, showing exactly why he is one of the best in the world in his position.

Rice has always read the game expertly defensively, and he was imperious in that regard at the Bernabeu, making two blocks, winning three ground duels, making four interceptions and five ball recoveries in a dominant defensive display.

The side of his game which he has improved massively on is his confidence on the ball, and he looked assured throughout in Madrid, driving Arsenal forward brilliantly throughout.

Rice is turning into the complete number eight, and he will play a vital part in any potential Champions League triumph.

Surprise package - Aston Villa

Aston Villa might no longer be in the Champions League, but they pulled some punches on their way out as they went down with a fight.

The night started in the worst possible way for Unai Emery's side as PSG found themselves 2-0 up after a goal from each attacking full-back.

5-1 down on aggregate, Villa looked down and out.

So their remarkable response was inspired and took us all by surprise.

Youri Tielemans started the revival before the break as his strike took a wicked deflection on its way into the top corner after some smart build-up play.

Villa remained on top but without the killer instinct early in the second half. That was until John McGinn changed that emphatically with a thunderbolt into the top corner from the edge of the box.

Two minutes later, a brilliant Marcus Rashford run and pullback was tucked in by centre-back Ezri Konsa with the composure of a centre forward to make a bouncing Villa Park believe.

This hardly felt real, but it was happening - the comeback of comebacks was on.

Gianluigi Donnarumma would then have the final say as he made two world-class saves to deny Youri Tielemans and Marcus Rashford at the end of a breathless five minutes which took Villa from the brink of exit to within touching distance of extra time.

The save to deny Rashford was special as the England international rifled a shot that was heading for the top corner, and it took an outstanding fingertip from Donnarumma to prevent the equaliser on aggregate.

Villa would continue to push for that all-important goal, but their moment had been and gone, and they didn't come as close again. Unai Emery can be proud of his Villans, who came tantalisingly close to pulling off the unthinkable.

Their Champions League journey might be over for now, but Villa showed they can mix it with Europe's elite and, by doing so, exceeded all expectations.

Team of the week - Arsenal

Just like Rice, Arsenal have won this award for two weeks in a row for good reason. Arsenal have outclassed the holders twice to win both legs and make a long-awaited return to the Champions League semi-finals. Mikel Arteta's side are peaking in Europe at the perfect moment, and last night's win was further proof that they are in a purple patch.

Aside from Rice's remarkable form, the return of Saka has been a big boost to Arsenal at a critical time. The England star was a threat throughout and richly deserved his goal in the second half yesterday after missing a penalty in the first period.

It was a finish that reminded Arsenal fans what they had been missing in front of goal in his absence, and it was his second since his return.

Teenage sensation Myles Lewis-Skelly was also outstanding in both legs as the emerging star continues to impress.

Those three will be crucial to Arsenal's chances in the semi-finals as the Gunners face French champions PSG in an extremely tough test.

The good news for Arteta is that Luis Enrique's side go into the semi-final as favourites after impressing in the last two rounds, taking the pressure off in their first Champions League semi-final since 2009.

They were underdogs against Real Madrid and ended up victorious. If Arsenal do the same again against PSG, then they will do what Liverpool and Aston Villa failed to do, and a dream Champions League final in Munich will await them.

Moment of the week - Europa League theme song confusion

Yes, you read that right. Let me set the scene. Aston Villa and PSG walk out to a deafening Villa Park in the biggest match in the former's modern history. The players are in the zone and ready for the iconic Champions League music to pump them up ahead of a box office quarter-final second leg.

So when the Europa League theme starts blaring from the speakers, the confusion on the faces of the players from both teams is priceless.

Ultimately, I am sure it had zero impact on the dramatic night of action which followed, but it was still a massive mess up (albeit a comical one).
