Sundowns were paired with Stade Malien in the last-8 and while no simple task, is just about the best outcome for them.
The Brazilians have never faced Stade before, but the Mali side does have some recent history against South African opposition.
They met Sekhukhune United in the group stages of the CAF Confederation Cup in the 2023-24 season, drawing 0-0 in South Africa and winning 1-0 away.
They also met Stellenbosch FC in the group stages of the same competition last season and lost 2-0 in South Africa, but won 2-0 at home.
Sundowns will be at home in the first leg before a difficult away day in the second.
Should Sundowns progress things could get a whole lot tougher. They will face the winner of the quarter-final tie between old foes Al Ahly and Esperance of Tunisia.
Sundowns’ history with Ahly is well-documented, though they did knock them out of the semi-finals last season and have had some memorable wins down the years.
Crucially perhaps, Sundowns will play the second leg of that tie in Pretoria.
In the other quarter-finals, defending champions Pyramids FC of Egypt will also be on the road in the opening leg as they head to Morocco to meet AS FAR.
RS Berkane of Morocco host Al Hilal of Sudan first in their match-up.
The quarter-final matches are scheduled for 13–14 March (first legs) and 20–21 March (second legs).
