Harry Kane became the fastest player to reach 100 goals for a club in the top five leagues this century after scoring a brace in Bayern Munich's emphatic 4-0 win over Werder Bremen.

Kane had played his part in a rampant start to the season for Vincent Kompany’s side, and he was in the mood to make an impact with two early shots, one of which went wide and the other was saved by Karl Hein.

Michael Olise was the provider for both of those opportunities, and he played an integral role in Bayern's 22nd-minute opener. It looked as though the Frenchman’s left-footed cross had been met by Jonathan Tah’s superb back-heeled finish, but replays suggested that the final touch had come off Luis Díaz.

Werder’s plans to keep it tight had gone out the window, as Kane was denied by Hein again after being played through by Leon Goretzka.

Olise was enjoying a fine game, linking up superbly with Serge Gnabry, whose shot flashed right across the face of goal.

Kane doubled Bayern’s advantage from 12 yards after being brought down by Marco Friedl in the box, as the England captain scored his 99th goal for the club. It was also his 18th consecutive successful spot-kick in the Bundesliga, breaking a German top-flight record, which he previously shared with Jörg Butt and Robert Lewandowski.

Bayern looked for a third when Gnabry fired over shortly after the restart, but Horst Steffen’s side were sensing a potential route back into this contest, as Jens Stage failed to find the target from Yukinari Sugawara's cross.

The Japanese full-back then had a chance himself moments later, latching onto Romano Schmid’s pass before being denied by Manuel Neuer at the near post. But there was a sense of inevitability about what was to come next, and it was another historic moment in the illustrious career of Kane.

Díaz played a pivotal role, driving forwards into the box and teeing up the Three Lions skipper for a sliding right-footed finish from close range. Kane had achieved a century of goals in only his 104th appearance for the club, and it was effectively game over from that point onwards.

Díaz was not far away from adding Bayern’s fourth, cutting in from the left and seeing his ferocious attempt sail just past the far post. Kompany’s side were enjoying themselves, and Olise was allowed to bamboozle his way into the box before being denied by Hein.

Kane’s work for the night was done, though, and was replaced by Nicolas Jackson in the 78th minute to end any hopes of a 10th Bayern hat-trick being achieved tonight.

There was still time for Konrad Laimer to add a fourth with a very tidy angled finish, capping off Die Roten’s marvellous night.

This win ensured Bayern claimed their eighth consecutive competitive win at the start of a season for the first time since 2016/17 under Carlo Ancelotti, but the majority of the column inches will be dedicated to Kane after he reached a century of club goals in one match fewer than Cristiano Ronaldo and Erling Haaland to firmly establish himself as one of the world’s top marksmen.
