It was a productive week for Africans in Europe’s major leagues, as many played decisive roles for their clubs, despite experiencing contrasting fortunes.

ENGLAND

Mohamed Salah proved decisive once again as Liverpool snatched a dramatic late 1-0 victory over Burnley at Turf Moor.

With the game drifting towards a frustrating draw, Hannibal Mejbri’s handball deep into stoppage time gifted the Egypt international the chance to strike from the penalty spot.

The former Africa Player of the Year, who had not managed a single effort all game, stepped up and smashed the ball into the top corner to seal a narrow win.

Elsewhere, Pape Matar Sarr inspired Tottenham Hotspur’s return to winning ways as they cruised past West Ham United 3-0.

After a goalless first half, the midfielder capitalised on poor set-piece defending just two minutes after the restart to break the deadlock.

West Ham’s hopes were further dashed when Tomas Soucek received a straight red card for a reckless challenge on Joao Palhinha

Spurs quickly took control, with Lucas Bergvall netting his first Premier League goal before Micky van de Ven sealed the victory.

At the Vitality Stadium, Antoine Semenyo continued his electric start to the Premier League season, scoring and assisting in Bournemouth’s 2-1 win over Brighton & Hove Albion

The Ghana international, who already had three goal contributions in as many games, set up Alex Scott’s superb left-footed strike in the 18th minute.

Kaoru Mitoma levelled matters for the Seagulls early in the second half, heading in Yankuba Minteh’s cross.

But the African restored the Cherries’ lead from the penalty spot after Jan Paul van Hecke fouled Evanilson, sealing a third straight win that lifted the Cherries to fourth place.

ITALY

Super-sub Caleb Ekuban proved Genoa’s hero, coming off the bench to snatch a dramatic stoppage-time equaliser in a 1-1 draw at Como

The hosts had led for most of the contest after Nico Paz struck in the 13th minute, with Cesc Fabregas’s side holding firm against sustained Genoa pressure. The match swung late on when Como defender Jacono Ramon was sent off in the 88th minute.

Deep into stoppage time, the Ghana international scrambled the ball over the line to earn Patrick Vieira’s men a hard-fought and unlikely share of the points.

In another fixture, Sassuolo earned their first points of the season as Alieu Fadera’s close-range strike sealed victory over an injury-hit Lazio

Meanwhile, Cote d’Ivoire’s Konan Ndri grabbed Lecce’s only goal, but it proved a mere consolation as they fell 4-1 to Atalanta, who left Nigeria’s Ademola Lookman out of the squad.

GERMANY

Serhou Guirassy starred as Borussia Dortmund extended their unbeaten start to the Bundesliga with a 2-0 win over 10-man Heidenheim

The Guinean opened the scoring with a powerful header in the 33rd minute after Budu Zivzivadze was sent off for a late tackle.

Maximilian Beier added a second on the stroke of halftime from Karim Adeyemi’s lay-off, sealing the victory. Despite Heidenheim pressing after the break, goalkeeper Diant Ramaj denied Guirassy twice, ensuring Dortmund claimed all three points.

Andreas Hountondji’s penalty rebound secured his place in St. Pauli history, becoming the first player to score in each of the club’s first three Bundesliga matches, as Danel Sinani’s late goal sealed a 2-1 win over Augsburg

Augsburg had taken the lead through Fabian Rieder’s 16th-minute header, but the Benin Republic international equalised just before halftime after Finn Dahmen saved his spot-kick.

Despite the visitors’ stronger second-half chances, Sinani’s 78th-minute strike, aided by a deflection, ensured St. Pauli maintained their unbeaten start to the season.

SPAIN

Etta Eyong made an immediate impact on his Levante debut, scoring the team’s second goal in a thrilling 2-2 draw against Real Betis.

The Frogs took an early two-goal lead, with Ivan Romero opening the scoring before the Cameroonian dribbled past the goalkeeper to double the advantage.

Real Betis pulled one back in stoppage time of the first half and equalised in the 80th minute through Pablo Fornals

Despite Levante’s continued attacking efforts, including chances for Roger Brugue and Morales, the home side had to settle for a point after a hard-fought contest that showcased their determination and attacking intent.

FRANCE

Jean-Philippe Gbamin opened the scoring for Angers as they played out a 1-1 draw with Metz.

The Cote d’Ivoire international headed home in the 14th minute after winning the ball in the six-yard box. The visitors pressured throughout, earning a penalty in the 62nd minute, but Herve Koffi brilliantly saved Habib Diallo’s spot-kick.

Angers responded strongly after the break, with substitutes Himad Abdelli and Prosper Peter creating chances. Abdelli’s late strike from the penalty spot in the 88th minute ensured that the game ended all squared.

Morocco international Nayef Aguerd capped Marseille’s dominant 4-0 win over 10-man Lorient with a deflected long-range strike late in the match.

The visitors had gone down to 10 men in the 12th minute after Darlin Yongwa’s reckless challenge on Michael Amir Murillo, allowing Mason Greenwood to convert the resulting penalty and spark Marseille’s dominance.

Benjamin Pavard powered in Greenwood’s corner for a second, while Angel Gomes rifled a volley for the third.

Despite Lorient’s brief resistance and a VAR scare, the home team controlled the game throughout, securing a resounding victory and boosting their Ligue 1 campaign after a slow start.
