Chippa United head to Mamelodi Sundowns on Friday night for their hastily rearranged Betway Premiership clash looking to do the ‘impossible’ this season … win in Pretoria.

Sundowns have been imperious at home in all competitions, while their league record in front of their own fans remains incredible.

Here are some statistics behind their home comforts.

Imperious at home

Sundowns have won their last eight games in a row, home and away, in the Betway Premiership, which has seen them go toe to toe with Orlando Pirates in the title race.

But at home, they have won 23 of their last 24 games, with the only blemish a 1-1 draw with Pirates in November.

That means they have taken 70 out of a possible 72 points since they were beaten 1-0 by Cape Town City on the final day of the 2023/24 season.

That loss to City is their only home defeat in the league in almost four years.

Since losing 1-0 to TS Galaxy in August 2022, they have played 53 home league games and won 46, with six draws and that single defeat.

That is 144 points out of a possible 159. Just staggering.

Chippa’s poor record in Pretoria

Chippa have visited Sundowns on 14 occasions since their first clash in Pretoria in 2012, and they have lost 13 times, scoring only three goals and conceding 29.

The only time they avoided defeat was in a 0-0 draw in 2017.

That being said, they did hold Sundowns to a 1-1 draw in the Eastern Cape earlier this campaign.

Overall, Sundowns lead the head-to-head 19-2, with 10 draws, but at home they have been utterly dominant.

The only three players to score for Chippa away to Sundowns are Mark Mayambela, Rhulani Manzini and Thabiso Lebitso, who was the last to do so more than three years ago.

Bad travellers

Chippa have been dire on the road over the past year, with a single away victory in that time. That came against fellow strugglers Orbit College in January, when they secured a 1-0 win.

For the rest, it has been a tale of woe. Since March 2025, they have played 19 matches away from home, with eight draws and 10 defeats to go with that one win.

They have taken seven points from a possible 33 on the road this season, scoring only seven goals in the process.

Only bottom side Magesi FC, with five points, have managed fewer points on their travels this season.
