Kaizer Chiefs avoided a club-record fifth defeat in a row when they claimed a 1-0 Betway Premiership victory over Durban City at FNB Stadium on Sunday to secure what could be a precious three points in their bid to finish third this season.

The only goal of the game was scored on 69 minutes and it was a cracker too, with Glody Lilepo, who is building a reputation for fine goals, firing in from the edge of the box with a shot that had little backlift but plenty of power.

It was a fifth goal of the campaign for Lilepo and a third in the league, with Flavio Silva (five goals) still Chiefs’ most prolific scorer in the Betway Premiership this campaign. Silva has seven goals in all competitions.

The win sees Chiefs leapfrog City into fifth place in the league, and they are now just a point behind third-placed Sekhukhune United with two games in hand.

The team that finishes third in the Betway Premiership will qualify for the CAF Confederation Cup next season.

Chiefs created the lion’s share of chances in the game, but little that was clear-cut until the winning moment, while they also dominated possession.

Had they lost, it would have been a club-record fifth defeat in a row in all competitions, but they have avoided that embarrassment.

"It was a very intense game but I think we knew this was coming," Chiefs midfielder Lebo Maboe said. "We were prepared for them and I am just happy that we could collect all three points at home.

"I am so proud of the boys. We have been playing really well but we haven't been getting results. I think there are good times ahead.

"It is normal in football that there is uncertainty when you go through a slump. But it was important for us to stay mentally strong and believe in what we are doing. To believe in ourselves as players."

Chiefs are next in action on Saturday when they host bottom side Magesi FC, which they will see as an excellent chance to climb further up the table.
