Malmo FF have sacked their head coach, Henrik Rydstrom, this morning with immediate effect.

The decision comes two days after Malmo began their UEFA Europa League (UEL) League Phase campaign with a disappointing 2-1 loss at home to Bulgarian champions Ludogorets Razgrad.

That was the final straw for the MFF board, who have seen the Allsvenskan champions' title challenge fade in recent weeks. Assistant coach Theodor Olsson has also been dismissed.

European football for next season is also in serious doubt - a four-match winless run in the league and just one win in their last six has seen Malmo fall to sixth in the standings, four points behind third-placed AIK with six matches still to play.

Defeat to Hacken in the Svenska Cupen Final means Sweden's most successful club in history will finish this campaign with no silverware.

A better showing in the UEL League Phase than last season's 31st-place finish was the ambition for the Himmelsblatt, but one home loss was enough to convince the Malmo hierarchy that Rydstrom was not the man to achieve it.

Malmo chairman Anders Palsson outlined the decision on the club website.

"For a long time, we have been able to observe a lack of sporting performance and results, where along the way we have supported and added resources without achieving an improvement. This is also the reason why we have decided to part ways with Henrik."

A league and cup winner in his playing days with Kalmar, for whom he played more than 800 times, Rydstrom began coaching in the youth setup at the same club before working his way up to assistant head coach in 2018.

He then spent two seasons as head coach of Sirius, before landing the Malmo job ahead of the 2023 season. The now-49-year-old guided MFF to the league title in his first season, before completing a league and cup double last year.

"We thank Henrik for his time at Malmo FF. Winning two Swedish Championship titles and one Swedish Cup title, including a double, means that his coaching career will forever have a place of honour in the sky-blue history books." added Palsson.
