Doubt has been swirling for several hours around Walid Regragui. While the Moroccan press have been discussing a possible resignation from the national team coach, the Royal Moroccan Football Federation was quick to deny the news on Friday. Yet, despite this official denial, questions remain. Here’s what Flashscore can reveal.

Tensions, unspoken issues, and areas of uncertainty: the future of Walid Regragui with Morocco is hanging in the balance. According to several reports in both the Moroccan and French press, the coach even submitted his resignation to management on Friday. This rumour was quickly denied by the Royal Moroccan Football Federation.

The Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF) categorically denies the information published on certain news sites claiming that Walid Regragui, head coach of the national ‘A’ team, has submitted his resignation,” the organisation stated in an official press release.

Is this a hidden truth or simply an attempt to put out the fire as quickly as possible? One thing is certain: something is happening behind the scenes in Rabat. The real turning point came with the defeat in the final of the Africa Cup of Nations - and, even more so, the missed penalty by Brahim Diaz - which has shaken things up within the national team’s structure.

Morocco tightens the screws, Regragui on shaky ground

Diaz’s panenka attempt in the 114th minute of the CAN final still haunts everyone’s minds. Behind the scenes at the FRMF, this miss is seen as a professional error, with the blame placed not on the player, but on the technical staff, especially goalkeeper coach Omar Harrak.

Why? Because Edouard Mendy is known for waiting until the very last moment before diving - a trait the team believes all players should have been aware of. This is information the goalkeeper coach should have communicated beforehand.

The Royal Moroccan Football Federation has therefore decided to tighten its grip. While Harrak is directly in the spotlight, the entire technical staff is under internal scrutiny.

And even though, as of now, no dismissals have been made official, the trend is clear: according to our sources, management is considering parting ways with the goalkeeper coach and other staff members deemed more responsible than Diaz.

However, unlike the staff, the FRMF wants to continue with Walid Regragui - at least for the next six months, up to the 2026 World Cup. The timing is considered too tight to change coaches just four months before the tournament begins, which partly explains the Federation's official denial issued on Friday.

And what about Regragui himself? According to our information, the coach has expressed his desire to leave verbally but has not submitted a formal resignation. He is mainly unhappy with the situation surrounding his staff and is also questioning whether he has reached the end of his cycle after achieving so many goals.

The question remains whether he will make it to the United States or leave before then. For Morocco, the position is clear: Regragui is expected to stay until July. After that, both parties will meet to take stock, plan for the future, and, above all, look ahead to the 2030 World Cup in the best possible conditions.

With this in mind, the Royal Moroccan Football Federation is already thinking long-term. In fact, they have contacted Andres Iniesta to offer him the role of sporting director - a strong signal of the FRMF’s ambition and long-term strategy.
