Current leader of the Giro d'Italia, Danish cycling star Jonas Vingegaard says that he is unlikely still to be racing in five year's time.

Jonas Vingegaard still has plenty of ambitions he wants to fulfill in cycling, but at the same time, the 29-year-old Visma rider has no plans of continuing his career beyond the foreseeable future.

The Danish cycling star used the day off at the Giro d'Italia to comment on his immediate future, his ambitions, and his possibility of challenging Tadej Pogacar in the Tour de France.

"For now, I just take it year by year. This is my eighth year as a pro, and I don't see myself racing until I'm 35. I turn 30 in December, so I don't have that many years left. But as long as I enjoy it, I will keep racing", said Vingegaard on a press conference on Monday.

At 29 years old, Vingegaard is slowly starting to look toward the end of his career. "Well, I mean, I've said in recent years that I take it year by year. That's what I've done since my crash in 2024. At the moment, I do not see myself retiring."

This year, Vingegaard won Paris-Nice and the Tour of Catalonia, and earlier in his career, he won Tirreno-Adriatico, the Tour of the Basque Country, and the Critérium du Dauphiné.

The plan is also to challenge Tadej Pogacar for the victory in the Tour de France in July, and Vingegaard sees participating in the Giro as a stepping stone towards that goal.

"I think it can help me reach a higher level. I have seen in recent years that when I have completed a Grand Tour, my level has actually been higher in the second Grand Tour than in the first. So that is also what I hope for in the Tour", said Vingegaard.
