NHL roundup: Reigning Olympic gold medalists make history

Team USA Olympic gold medalist defencemen Charlie McAvoy (Boston Bruins) and Zach Werenski (Columbus Blue Jackets) both made franchise history during the NHL's 13-game slate on Saturday!

Flyers 3-1 Bruins

Philly's Travis Konecny (23) put them on the board first in the third period, then assisted on Jamie Drysdale's (6) goal to put them up 2-0. 

Then, McAvoy extended his point streak to nine games after recording his fifth goal of the season to cut the lead to 2-1. He now joins the legendary Ray Bourque as the only two Bruins defencemen to reach that feat in the last 40 years.

Sean Couturier (6) would score the empty-netter to put the game out of reach to give the Flyers their second-straight win after coming back from the break, as they improved to 27-21-11. 

Boston fell to 33-21-5. 

Islanders 4-3 Blue Jackets

Werenski extended his point streak to nine games with an assist during Saturday's matchup against the New York Islanders, making it the longest by a defenceman in franchise history. He recorded his 44th assist to set up Mason Marchment for his 14th goal of the season, which put the Blue Jackets up 2-0. 

The Islanders would score three straight afterwards in the same period to take the lead, but Columbus responded with an Adam Fantilli (15) goal, assisted by Werenski for his 45th assist. 

After a scoreless third period, the Islanders completed the rally after Simon Holmstrom (14) scored the game-winner in overtime. 

The Islanders improved to 34-21-5, while the Blue Jackets fell to 29-21-8. 

Sharks 5-4 Oilers

The Sharks took what looked to be a commanding 3-1 lead with goals from Macklin Celebrini (29), Michael Misa (3), Barclay Goodrow (5), all in the first period. But Edmonton wouldn't back down. 

Evan Bouchard (17) scored the only goal of the second to cut the lead to 3-2 before teammate Trent Frederic (3) tied it up a couple of minutes into the third and final frame. 

But the Sharks would go on to find their way to a win with two more goals, this time from Alexander Wennberg (11) and Shakir Mukhamadullin (4), as they improved to 28-25-4

Edmonton's Connor McDavid recorded an assist on all three of the Oilers' goals, bringing his season total up to 68 - most in the NHL. It marked his 18th multi-assist game and his sixth with at least three in one game. 

The Oilers fell to 29-24-8.

Devils 3-1 Blues

Jack Hughes, who shot the game-winner goal for Team USA in the Olympics gold medal match against Canada, picked up his 27th assist of the season in the Devils win over the Blues, who fell to 21-29-9.

Timo Meier (16), Dougie Hamilton (8), and Nico Hischier (20) scored for the Devils as they improved to 29-29-2.

Rangers 3-2 Penguins

After Ryan Shea (4) put the Penguins up 2-0 with a goal just two minutes into the second period, New York's rally was sparked by a Mika Zibanejad (24) goal exactly 10 minutes into the period. 

Rangers teammate Taylor Raddysh (9) would eventually find the net during the start of the third period, which sent it into a scoreless overtime, followed by a shootout where Vincent Trocheck, originally picked up the primary assist on Zibanejad's goal, sent home the game-winner for a Rangers team that improved to 23-29-7. 

Rangers goaltender Igor Shesterkin recorded his ninth 30-save game of the season, forcing the Penguins to fall to 30-15-13.

Avalanche 3-1 Blackhawks

Connor Bedard scored his 25th goal of the season, but it wasn't enough as the Blackhawks only got off 15 shots on goal, falling to 22-28-9 on the year. 

Cale Makar (17) scored two goals, both of which were assisted by Nathan MacKinnon (57) and Martin Necas (43). Gavin Brindley (6) scored the other as the Avs improved to 39-10-9. 

Hurricanes 5-2 Red Wings

The Canes are now riding a 12-point streak after their win over the Red Wings, improving to 38-15-6 on the season. 

Taylor Hall and Shayne Gostisbehere both had one goal and two assists each, while Sebastian Aho (22), Eric Robinson (11), Jackson Blake (17) scored the other three for Carolina. 

Detroit dropped to 34-20-6. 

Kings 2-0 Flames

Alex Laferriere (14) scored the only even-strength goal of the game while Adrian Kempe (22) put home the empty-netter as the Kings improved to 24-21-14, snapping what was a five-game losing streak. 

Goalie Anton Forsberg recorded his second shutout of the season, 10th of his career, after stopping all 29 of Calgary's shots. Flames goalie Dustin Wolf also had himself a stellar game, stopping 35 of the Kings' 36 shots, marking it as his ninth game of the season with at least 30 saves 

Calgary dropped to 24-28-6.

Senators 5-2 Maple Leafs

After the Leafs went up 1-0 with Morgan Rielly's eighth goal of the season, the Sens poured it on with both Dylan Cozens (20) and Drake Batherson (21) scoring two goals each. 

Ottawa outshot Toronto 40-23 as they improved to 29-22-98, while the Leafs dropped their third straight, falling to 27-24-9. 

Sabres 6-2 Lightning

The Sabres scored five-straight goals before the Lightning finally found the net late into the second period. Josh Norris (8) scored twice for Buffalo, while Ramsus Dahlin led the team with three points (one goal, two assists). 

Buffalo continues to stun the hockey world and show they mean business as they improved to 35-19-6, sitting at third in the Eastern Conference as they're now winners of three straight. 

Tampa, who sit right above the Sabres in the Eastern Conference standings, fell to 38-16-4 and have now lost back-to-back games. 

Canadiens 6-2 Capitals

Alexander Ovechkin scored career goals No. 920 and 921 in the team's loss (23rd and 24th of the season). It marked his fourth multi-goal game of the season, with two of them now coming against the Habs. The other was his only hat trick of the season back on November 20, 2025. 

On the other side, Montreal's young superstar Cole Caufield scored twice as well, racking up his season tally to 35, making it his ninth multi-goal game of the year. 

The Habs improved to 33-17-9, while the Caps fell to 31-24-7. 

Stars 3-2 Predators

The Preds took a 2-0 lead in the first period after a power play goal from Michael Bunting (13) and an even-strength goal from Steven Stamkos for his 30th of the season, marking his 10th season with at least 30 goals. 

But the Stars rallied, and it started with a Wyatt Johnston (32) power play goal in the second, followed by Nathan Bastian's fourth goal of the season in the third period that forced overtime. 

Jason Robertson (33) scored the game-winner to complete the comeback for the Stars, with one of the assists coming from Johnston, as they improved to 36-14-9. They are currenty riding an eight-game win streak, while the Preds dropped to 27-24-8.
