The Florida Panthers rallied to beat the Carolina Hurricanes in a shootout, while Vancouver Canucks forward Kiefer Sherwood scored his second hat trick of the year in their win over the New York Islanders in the NHL's five-game slate on December 19th!

Panthers 4-3 Hurricanes

Jordan Staal (10) put the Canes up 1-0 in the first period. After a scoreless second from both teams, Sebastian Aho (13) scored two goals of his own, all within eight minutes of each other in the second period, to give Carolina a commanding lead.

But that wouldn't phase the defending champions.

Less than three minutes later, Brad Marchand (20) put the Panthers on the board. His teammates Sam Bennett (12) and Sam Reinhart (18) would follow up with two goals to tie it all up with less than 50 seconds left in regulation to send it to OT - where neither team scored.

Reinhart would score the first goal of the shootout, followed by Carolina's Jackson Blake, but it Evan Rodrigues who sent it home for the Panthers as they improved to 19-13-2, extending their win streak to four games.

Carolina fell to 22-9-3.

Canucks 4-1 Islanders

David Kampf scored his first goal with the Canucks to put them up 1-0 almost nine minutes into the first period.

Kiefer Sherwood (15) would score a pair of goals after him before the end of the first period, before scoring his third later on to complete the hat trick with an empty-netter.

Anders Lee (9) scored the lone goal for the Islanders, who fell 19-13-3 following the loss.

Vancouver are the winners of three straight and have now improved to 14-17-3.

Avalanche 3-2  Jets

Brent Burns (5) and Martin Necas (15) scoring in the first period proved to be crucial for the Avalanche.

Morgan Barron (6) would score a short-handed goal in the second to slash the lead in half for Winnipeg, but Parker Kelly (7) responded a period later to put the Avs back up by two.

Just a little more than a minute after Kelly's goal, Winnipeg would gain ground thanks to a Mark Scheifele (17) goal to cut the lead to 3-2.

But the league's best Avalanche managed to hold on as they improved to 25-2-7, winning four straight.

Winnipeg dropped to 15-17-2 and have now loss back-to-back games.

Devils 2-1 Mammoth

In the lowest scoring game of the night, each of the three goals were scored in separate periods.

Utah rookie Daniil But scored his first career goal during the first period and that would be all she wrote for the Mammoth.

Connor Brown (9) would score in the second for New Jersey, with Stefan Noesen (3) on a power play in the third as the Devils improved to 20-14-1.

Goalie Jacob Markstrom put up 32 saves for the Devils, his fifth of the season with 32 or more in a game.

Utah fell to 17-17-3

Stars 8-3 Ducks

Dallas' Oskar Back (3) put his team up 1-0, which was followed up by Anaheim's Poehling (2) to tie it up 1-1 in the first. Then, chaos ensued as the Stars scored six straight goals heading into the third period.

Jason Robertson (22) led the way with two goals of his own.

Dallas improved to 24-7-5, winning three straight, while the Ducks fell to 20-13-2.
