Connor McDavid continued his insane start to the season as the Edmonton Oilers shut out the Calgary Flames in the first Battle of Alberta of the season! Meanwhile, the Washington Capitals' two big offseason acquisitions led them to a win over their rival Philadelphia Flyers.

Capitals 5-2 Flyers

The Capitals' big offseason additions, Alex Tuch and Jordan Kyrou, carried them to a win over their rival Philadelphia Flyers. Tuch scored twice to bring his season total to nine.

Six of those nine goals this season have come from three two-goal games. He's now put up at least two goals in back-to-back games.

Kyrou accounted for two of the other three Caps goals, bringing his season total to four. Kyrou now has at least one point in five straight games. He's tied for second on the team in goals, third in assists (6), and third in points (10).

Meanwhile, defenseman Jack St. Ivany put up two assists in his Caps debut. The 27-year-old has never played in more than 20 games in a season during his current five-year career. He played in just four with the Winnipeg Jets last season.

As for Philly, they now sit at the bottom of the Eastern Conference while being tied with the Vancouver Canucks for the worst point differential (-22) in the league.

Capitals record: 7-4-0 (W2)

Flyers record: 3-8-4 (L2)

Oilers 4-0 Flames

McDavid recorded another two assists in the Oilers' shutout of the Flames in the Battle for Alberta. He now brings his season total up to 28 through 13 games. No other player in the NHL has more than 16 assists, and no other player has more than 25 points - McDavid has 36.

Mathieu Joseph (3), Mattias Ekholm (2), Kasperi Kapanen (4), and Alex Formenton (2) all scored for the Oilers, while goaltender Tristan Jarry recorded a 24-save shutout.

Jarry had just one shutout in each of the last two seasons and now already has his first this year after just six starts, ending the Flames' four-game win streak.

Oilers record: 9-2-2 (W1)

Flames record: 5-7-0 (L1)

Avalanche 5-2 Devils

The Colorado Avalanche doubled the number of shots on goal the New Jersey Devils had in this game (44-22). Connor Brown put the Devils up 1-0 with an unassisted short-handed goal, also his first of the season. So the Avs took that personally.

Colorado went on to score five straight goals from five different players, eventually going on to outshoot the Devils 35-16 between the second and third periods.

Brent Burns and Sam Malinski both brought their season assists total up to five after both recorded two in the win. Nazem Kadri (2) and Jaden Schwartz (4) both had one goal and one assist in the game.

Brown scored his second goal of the season for the Devils in the final five minutes of the game, but it was already over way before then.

Avalanche record: 7-5-1 (W1)

Devils record: 8-5-0 (L1)
