Just three matches took place in the National Hockey League (NHL) on Wednesday, as two of the three home teams came out on top.

In New Jersey, the Devils skated to a 4-1 success over the Minnesota Wild. Paul Cotter got the home team in front towards the end of the opening period, before Brenden Dillon doubled the advantage..

The Wild, who had 30 shots on goal in the contest, finally got on the board in the third period. After Arseni Gritsyuk got his first-ever NHL goal to make it 3-0, Matthew Boldy found the back of the net to give his team hope.

However, there was no further headway on the deficit for Minnesota after that. Jesper Bratt scored an empty netter in the final two minutes to seal the win for New Jersey, who lead the NHL on six wins in regulation time, all in a row.

The Buffalo Sabres also won on Wednesday night, as a pair of third period goals made the difference in a 4-2 win against the Detroit Red Wings. The teams traded the lead in the second period, where J.T. Compher put the guests in front.

Jason Zucker and Tyson Kozak then scored almost five minutes apart to give the Sabres their first lead in the game. That would not last more than two minutes, as Emmitt Finnie tied things back up.

The winning goal came on a power play 4:15 into the final period. Jack Quinn added to his two assists with a goal of his own, giving his side the advantage. Josh Doan rounded out the scoring a few minutes later.

Colten Ellis, the Buffalo goaltender, got his first win for the franchise in what was his debut, making him the ninth goalie to do that in Sabres history.

The loss snapped Detroit's five-game winning streak in what was their first road defeat of the young season. For the Sabres, they have now won three of their last four.

An all-Canadian affair rounded out the night, with the Montreal Canadiens pulling off a 2-1 overtime victory at the Calgary Flames. Zachary Bolduc put the Habs in front near the end of the first frame on a man advantage.

The Flames outshot their Canadian opponents 49-35 in the match, which saw them chase the game for a large part. They did find their leveller 5:56 into the third through Adam Klapka

For the third time already this season, the Canadiens were involved in a game going beyond 60 minutes. Just like the other two outings, they came out on top. It took Michael Mattheson a minute to score the winning goal to keep the good times going in Montreal.

It was Calgary's seventh loss in a row as they sit near the bottom of the Western Conference. In contrast, the Habs have six wins in their last seven to sit second in the East.
