Despite being without key players like Mie Hojlund, Ingvild Bakkerud and Louise Burgaard, Odense took a vital step towards reaching the quarter-final of the Champions League when they won the difficult first leg against Hungarian outfit DVSC Schaeffler 37-32.

Odense got off to a bright start, mainly thanks to a strong performance from Dutch keeper Yara ten Holte, who produced several reflex saves to keep the Danes in control of the match from the beginning.

At the other end, the duo of Helene Fauske and Thale Rushfeldt Deila were virtually unstoppable when it was most needed as the Danish visitors were without profiles like Mie Hojlund, Ingvild Bakkerud, and Louise Burgaard.

But the two Norwegians took on the responsibility with eight goals divided between them in the first half, while ten Holte had a save percentage of no less than 50, which gave Odense a half-time lead of 18-13.

This trend continued after the interval. Fauske and Deila got more help from their colleagues in the back line, as the Danes extended their lead to nine goals.

In the last 15 minutes, however, the Danes lost a bit of concentration as shots on goal began to lack quality, while a few defensive blunders cost Odense several two-minute suspensions.

Schaeffler took advantage of the advantage to cut the lead down to five goals, but the Danes never looked in danger of losing the victory.
