The Memphis Grizzlies traded Ja Morant to the Portland Trail Blazers on Monday in exchange for Jerami Grant and Kris Murray, according to NBA insider Shams Charania.

Morant, 26, has spent all seven seasons of his NBA career with the Grizzlies after they selected him second overall in the 2019 draft.

The two-time All-Star only played in 20 games this past season due to multiple injuries. He finished averaging 19.5 points, 8.1 assists, and 3.3 rebounds.

It marked the first time since his sophomore season that Morant averaged fewer than 20 points per game. Now, he'll be teaming up with Damian Lillard on a Portland team that finished seventh in the Western Conference with a 42-40 record.

Morant has only played in 79 total games over the past three seasons. During the 2023-2024 season, Morant was suspended for 25 games after flashing a gun multiple times on social media. He returned in December of that season, but his season was eventually cut again after suffering a torn labrum in his right shoulder during a January practice, playing in only nine games that year.

In the following season, he missed 32 total games after being suspended again, as well as due to physical issues that continued to put him in recovery and long rest periods, playing in 50 games before only hitting the 20-game mark this past season.

Morant's fall from glory has been one of disappointment in the NBA.

During his first four seasons, Morant became a Rookie of the Year, a two-time All-Star, made the 2021-2022 All-NBA team after averaging a career-best 27.4 points per game, and won Most Improved Player that same season.

Morant is still set to make $42.1 million this season and $44.8 million next year before becoming an unrestricted free agent.

Grant & Murray

Grant, 32, will be heading to his sixth team for his 13th year in the NBA. The defensive-minded forward spent the past four seasons with the Blazers, averaging at least 20 points per game in his first two seasons with them before enduring a multitude of injuries in the following two.

Grant is still under contract for two more years, as he's set to make $34.2 million this season and a $36.4 million player option the next.

Meanwhile, Murray will be entering his fourth season after the Blazers drafted him 23rd overall in the 2023 draft. The 25-year-old has yet to find his footing in the NBA, shooting below 28% from three and averaging less than seven points a game in each of his three seasons.
