The San Francisco 49ers announced on Saturday that former All-Pro linebacker Aldon Smith tragically passed away at the age of 36.

There is currently no cause of death information at this time.

Smith spent four of his six years in the NFL with the 49ers, then one with the Oakland Raiders, before finishing with a season on the Dallas Cowboys roster.

He became a force as soon as he entered the league in 2011 after being drafted seventh overall in the NFL Draft by the Niners.

He wracked up 14 sacks his rookie season in 2011 before putting up 19.5 a year later, along with 66 tackles, earning him First-Team All-Pro honours.

However, injuries and suspensions plagued him the next three seasons. In 2014, Smith was given a nine-game suspension for violating the league's substance abuse policy, along with the NFL's personal conduct policy.

A year later, Smith was suspended for the full season after being arrested for DUI in California, once again violating the league's substance abuse policy. The NFL would come down harder on Smith, giving him an indefinite ban from the league as his off-the-field troubles continued, including a domestic violence charge, for which he turned himself in.

He missed out on playing in the NFL for four years from 2016 to 2019 before finally being able to return in 2020, when he finished his career with the Dallas Cowboys, playing in all 16 games.

Smith finished his career with 228 tackles, 52.5 sacks, 10 pass deflections, five forced fumbles, one interception, and one touchdown.
