PSV overtook AZ last week after profiting from the latter's 1-1 draw against Willem II with a resounding 4-1 win over Sparta Rotterdam. After winning that game with a rotated starting XI, manager Peter Bosz reverted to his usual suspects, with Ivan Perisic, Ricardo Pepi, and Ruben van Bommel, who received his maiden Netherlands call-up this week, starting up front.
It was an unfortunate start in the Grolsch Veste for PSV, who saw Pepi forced off with an injury, and Younes Taha put FC Twente in front after eagerly prodding home a rebound after 14 minutes.
However, the reigning champions didn't leave it at that and raced back in front through Guus Til, heading PSV next to Twente after 24 minutes and beating Unnerstall five minutes later to earn his side the lead.
FC Twente looked to recover the lead via Sondre Orjasaeter and Robin Propper, with the former curling the ball just over Matej Kovar's crossbar, and Propper forcing a smart save out of the Czech stopper right before half-time.
The hosts jumped out the gates in the second half and continued mounting pressure on PSV, who breathed a sigh of relief after Orjasaeter's effort whistled past the top corner and Wout Weghorst's effort from up close was off the mark.
In a decent half of football, FC Twente got back alongside PSV through Weghorst, who escaped from the PSV backline, stayed calm in a one-on-one with Kovar and gave Twente a lifeline to grab all three points with 11 minutes to go.
The comeback was complete when Daouda Weidmann capped off a beautiful 60-yard solo with a neat finish - the Frenchman took the ball from a cleared corner and started from deep into his own half, battled off several PSV defenders and beat Kovar to put the Grolsch Veste alight.
PSV could not mount a valiant last-ditch effort to steal a point in Enschede, where FC Twente fans erupted after celebrating their club's first win over the champions in four years. The Eindhoven side officially lost the top spot after a week, relinquishing it back to AZ and even falling into third after Feyenoord's 5-0 win earlier on Sunday.
