In the mixed zone after the race, Gasly could barely put into words what this victory means for him: "Quite a lot of emotions. I am just extremely happy for the whole team. I have been in Formula 1 for nine years, trying to give my best every single weekend and it is not every time that we get a car that can fight for pole position.
"Today was the case and I am really happy, really proud to have seized this chance and make it work. It was a heck of a lap; we have been on it since the first lap in Q1. Nine years of waiting for that moment, that feeling.
"I got my first win at Monza and now I have got my first pole position, so it is a special place for me."
When asked if he had expected to be in contention for pole position, Gasly couldn't help but laugh.
He then said: "Definitely not! Monza is a bit of a unique track and I definitely exceeded all our expectations but since this morning I think the pace has been better. We managed to make a good step from P3 to qualifying and it was slightly bigger than the other guys around us.
"Straight from Q1, I was a bit surprised to see us up there, as our target was to make Q3. But then I was P1 in Q1 and P4 in Q2. I didn't want to get too excited, but then the first run in Q3 I was third again, and then I thought that I really have a shot at it.
"Then, as I said, it was my first time getting a true chance and I tried to leave everything I had out there."
Having never qualified on pole position, it came as little surprise that Gasly was quizzed on whether that was the best lap of his career.
Gasly admitted it was right up there: "It is not my first race in F1; I have done too many and I don't remember all of them. It is definitely one of these laps that I will put up there."
With an incredible opportunity on the horizon tomorrow when Gasly starts from the front of the grid, the Alpine driver was asked if he planned to fight for the win.
His response was that of a man just pleased to be on pole position today: "That is a problem for tomorrow. I am in a great position; I am starting first, I don't have anyone ahead of me, I have to just focus on my driving.
"I know what it looks having no one around me at this track and that gives me an advantage and it is probably the best place to do it.
"We will give our best shot and see what we can get out of it but I am excited."
