Sweden gave themselves far too much to do in the final end and fell to a 7-3 loss to Germany, handing the reigning Olympic gold medallists a fifth loss in six matches at the 2026 Winter Olympics.

A 1-5 record with three matches to play means Sweden will finish the 10-team group with a negative record, and only three wins plus a whole host of other results going their way can see them sneak into the top four.

It was a slow start for the Swedes, who blanked the first end before being forced into drawing for one point in the second. Germany had a 90% success rate across the match, and no wonder, given the expert double take-out from Marc Muskatewitz to give his side two in the third end.

Scoring two in an end is something Sweden didn't manage throughout the match, and after the teams took one each in ends four and five, a failed double take-out from Niklas Edin allowed Germany to steal and go 4-2 up.

With the German side 5-3 up in the ninth, Edin was forced into an audacious attempt to remove Germany's lying one with a promotion take-out, but the Swedes didn't come close, handing Germany a 6-3 lead with Sweden needing to take three in the tenth end to force an extra end.

Germany attempted to pack the house and not allow Sweden any room to manoeuvre, which again made Edin take on a promotion take-out. It was a decent attempt by the Swedish skip with no time-outs remaining, but in the end, Germany were still lying one and they took the match, 7-3.

Sweden are likely only playing for pride from now on in Italy, and will be up against Switzerland on Tuesday morning as the search for win number two continues.
