Sweden finally got a win on the board on Saturday by beating China 6-4, but needed to quickly string a few wins together in the Round Robin and get back in the race for the top four. USA, with two wins and two losses coming into this, had ambitions of sitting in the Semi-final places come the end of this morning's (Sunday 15th) play.
The Swedes had the hammer in the opening end, but a poor draw from skip Niklas Edin meant they had to be content with just one point when two was on offer, then a take-out from American skip Daniel Casper levelled things up after two ends.
A high-pressure raise from Edin was expertly timed to take one for Sweden in the third, when the US were lying two, but the match swung in the Americans' favour in the fourth.
A succession of double take-out attempts from Sweden failed to be executed successfully, allowing Casper a simple draw with the last stone to earn three points and a 4-2 lead for the USA.
Following a point each in the next two ends, things got worse for the Swedes in the seventh when Edin missed another double take-out with the last stone, extending the American lead to three. Though they hit back with two points in the eighth, the USA responded with two of their own in the penultimate end.
That left Sweden needing three in the 10th end to take the match to a decider, but when Edin left the US lying one after his second-last stone, Casper executed a simple clearance to ensure victory with a stone to spare.
Not involved in the evening session, Sweden risk falling further behind before they meet Germany on Monday.
