Steve Borthwick's decision to pack his bench with some of his best players paid off as England beat Australia 25-7 in their Quilter Nations Series opener at Twickenham on Saturday.

Borthwick had selected six British and Irish Lions among the replacements, a decision that came in response to last year's autumn, where England relinquished late leads in a flurry of losses. The decision paid dividends as his side started their campaign with a commanding victory against an ever-improving Wallabies outfit.

It was one of the Lions, Henry Pollock, whose incredible pick-up and dash put England more than a score up on the hour mark, following an exchange of first-half tries from Ben Earl and Harry Potter. Thereafter there were scores from Alex Mitchell and Luke Cowan-Dickie to hand England an eight successive victory.

England's fast start

England started the game the more enterprising of the two teams, kicking for the corner and taking quick taps from kickable penalties, but the Wallabies - conquers of the Lions in the third Test and world champions South Africa in their Rugby Championship opener - initially held firm.

George Ford finally opted to kick for poles at the end of the opening quarter for a 3-0 advantage, and seconds later the hosts extended their lead. From the restart, Tom Roebuck chased a box kick from Mitchell and won the aerial battle, popping inside to Sam Underhill who quickly shipped the ball to the speedy Earl to score under the posts to make it 10-0.

England's tails were up and were quickly back on the attack down the right. They were one pass away from a potential 17-point lead, but Potter, who moments before had done brilliantly to hold up Earl over the line, intercepted that final pass to Freddie Steward to race clear untouched and reduce England's lead to three points going into half-time.

Borthwick unleashed five Lions from the bench in one fell swoop just over ten minutes into the second half, and so began England's squeeze on their opponents. Pollock's try came off the back of a superb kick chase from Roebuck once more, batting the ball back for his chasing team-mates.

Pollock's fresh legs won the race as he plucked the ball superbly to sprint over the line after a despairing dive from visiting full-back Andrew Kellaway.

Mitchell then sniped over from close range as the Australians began to fade, before Cowan-Dickie put the result to bed by rumbling over from close range.

Borthwich now has a decision to make, as his side next take on Fiji, after which they face the All Blacks. The England boss must decide whether to rest his stars next week or keep the momentum going ahead of their toughest test of the series on 15 November.
