Australia also suffered a shock early exit from the Davis Cup just weeks after star player Alex De Minaur opted to rest up for the finals to take place later this year.

Football

The star of the last week was no doubt young Socceroos hopeful Mo Toure, who has racked up four goals in just 100 minutes of football for new club Norwich City.

Toure came off the bench to put Norwich up 2-0 in their weekend home game over Blackburn before earning a 60-minute start on Tuesday night and demolishing Oxford United with all three of the Canaries goals.

Unsurprisingly, he registered a Flashscore player rating of 9.9, the best of any overseas-based Australian so far this season.

Toure is already well and truly on Socceroos coach Tony Popovic's radar after scoring a double in the second leg of the September home and away friendly against New Zealand, and whilst he couldn't get on the scoresheet against either Colombia or Venezuela later in the year, this kind of form is going to see him as one of the first selected in the final World Cup squad.

It was a fairly quiet weekend otherwise for Socceroos in Europe with no major goals or assists recorded. Garang Kuol got the best player rating of the remainder of the bunch, rating a 7.8 out of 10 in Sparta Prague's 3-0 away win over Zlín for 12 accurate final third passes and creating one big chance.

Paul Izzo also kept a clean sheet for Danish club Randers in a scoreless draw, although he faced only two shots on target.

NBA

After being double-traded last week and ending up alongside Dyson Daniels at Atlanta Hawks, Jock Landale had an excellent debut for his new franchise when scoring 26 points and racking up 11 off the glass in Atlanta's two point win over Utah Jazz.

Johnny Furphy's NBA season came to an abrupt end when he landed awkwardly during the third quarter of the Indiana Pacers' loss to Toronto Raptors on Monday morning, tearing an ACL not long after a frustrating ankle injury robbed him of any momentum throughout the season.

It's also an untimely for the Boomers as they prepare for the FIBA World Cup in August 2027, and whilst they'll likely have Furphy well and truly recovered by then, a 35-game NBA season is hardly ideal development for the 21-year-old who is set to be a key squad member.

Tennis

Our decision to rest Alex De Minaur for the first World Group round of the 2026 Davis Cup backfired after we lost away to Ecuador on clay surfaces at the weekend.

Rinky Hijikata and James Duckworth both lost as favourites to Ecuadorian opponents ranked outside the ATP's top-200, and despite Jason Kubler winning his singles match, Australia's fate was sealed in the doubles when Hijikata and Jordan Thompson lost 7-6 6-4 to little knowns Diego Hidalgo and Gonzalo Escobar on the final day.

It's unknown why men's doubles Australian Open runner-up Kubler did not partake in the doubles rubber other than a potential physical or workload issue.

Whilst clay is our weakest surface, the harsh reality of Australia's skinny stocks in the professional men's game will now have well and truly hit home after this nightmare result, exposing how little significant talent we have beyond De Minaur and Alexei Popyrin, who was also absent from the tie.

Golf

27-year-old Min Woo Lee picked up a T28 finish at the Phoenix Open following a disappointing final round score of 73 in a PGA tournament won by world number five Chris Gotterup in a playoff.

For his troubles, Min added another US$62,948 (AU$88,771 on current exchange rate) to his career prizemoney. Not bad for another week of work.

He moves this week to the iconic Pebble Beach Pro-Am, which has been running annually (barring World War II) since 1937.
