The two shock winners in the Round of 16 met in the third Quarter-final of EuroBasket 2025, and it was Finland who grabbed an unlikely place in the last four for the very first time, beating Georgia 93-79 in Riga, Latvia.

Having finished third in Group B in their own Nokia Arena, Tampere, Finland caused one of the biggest surprises in international basketball history by beating Serbia 92-86 in the opening knockout round.

24 hours later, Georgia rivalled them for biggest upset of the tournament with a huge 90-80 victory over France after only scraping through Group C in fourth place and on head-to-head record.

The first quarter began with the lead regularly changing hands, with plenty of damage being done from beyond the arc, as Lauri Markkanen and Mikael Jantunen traded three-pointers with Tornike Shengalia and Goga Bitadze, before Shengalia levelled things up at 12-12 with 03:43 to play.

But Finland used that 03:43 to outstanding effect, going on a remarkable run to end the first 10 minutes leading 28-15, as Sasu Salinen hit two of the Finns' four three-point shots in that streak.

Edon Maxhuni twice ensured the lead grew to 15 points in the early exchanges of the second period before the Crusaders began to fight back, decreasing the Finnish advantage to nine points with just under seven minutes until half-time.

But again, the Wolfpack had the better of the latter part of the quarter - Miikka Muurinen and Jantunen were prolific, before a slam dunk from Elias Valtonen saw Finland go 20 points clear. Duda Sanadze's three on the buzzer cut the lead to 17, but Finland were still 57-40 ahead at the half.

Three more for the Utah Jazz's Markkanen early in the third quarter saw the lead grow back to 20 points, before Georgia hit back, as Shengalia, Sanadze and Alexander Mamukelashvili made contributions to a 17-7 run that saw the deficit cut in half, at 69-59 with a minute to go.

Mazhuni got Finland past the 70-point mark, but Mamukelashvili ensured the final three points of the quarter went Georgia's way, making the score 71-62 to Lassi Tuovi's side with 10 minutes remaining.

Whatever Aleksandar Dzikic said to his players at half-time was still ringing in their ears at the start of the final quarter, as a 5-2 run forced Finland to take a time-out with 07:44 to play and the lead down to six points.

However, a three from Miro Little settled Finnish nerves, then another from Olivier Nkamhoua rounded off an 8-0 streak for the Nordic side which all but killed off the Georgian revival.

Georgia hit the next seven points to give themselves hope inside the final five minutes, but back-to-back threes from Elias Valtonen finally booked Finland's place in the Semi-finals, and it was fitting that the final basket was antother three, this time from Maxhuni, making the final score 93-79.

One consolation for Mamukelashvili was that he was the game's top scorer with 22 points, three more than Mikael Jantunen. Salin's seven rebounds was one clear of Bitadze's total, while Little led the assist charts with nine.

Later this evening, heavyweights Germany and Slovenia meet in the fourth Quarter-final to determine who will be taking on Finland for a place in the Final.

Greece and Turkey will play in the other Semi-final, and both matches will take place on Friday 12th September, before the Bronze medal match and Final on Sunday 14th.
