Detroit Lions running back David Montgomery has been traded to the Houston Texans for two Day 3 picks and offensive lineman Juice Scruggs, according to several sources.

The Detroit Lions get a fourth-round pick, a 2027 seventh-round pick, and offensive lineman Juice Scruggs in return for David Montgomery.

It's the second trade the Texans have completed in the last two days after trading starting right tackle Tytus Howard to the Cleveland Browns in exchange for a fifth-round pick.

Montgomery, 28, joined the Lions in 2023 from the Chicago Bears and formed a formidable running back duo with Jahmyr Gibbs. In his three seasons in Detroit, Montgomery racked up 2,506 yards and 33 rushing touchdowns, while also going for 650 receiving yards.

In 2025, Jahmyr Gibbs was named the starter and was given the bulk of the touches. Montgomery thus played the statistically worst season of his career with 716 rushing yards and 8 touchdowns, while being given zero starts.

Together with Jahmyr Gibbs, Montgomery formed a duo called 'Sonic and Knuckles'. The duo went for 6,086 rushing yards and 2,099 receiving yards together in Detroit, with a total of 82 rushing and receiving touchdowns being scored between them.

In Houston, Montgomery joins a running back room consisting of Woody Marks and Joe Mixon. Mixon didn't play a snap during the 2025 season after suffering a mysterious off-field foot injury, while rookie Marks ran for 703 yards and 2 rushing touchdowns

Offensive lineman Juice Scruggs was picked by the Texans with the 62nd pick of the 2023 NFL Draft and started 20 games across three seasons. The 26-year-old center started just one game last season.
